Rusty Details Part 1

November 5, 2019 by Mitch Taylor

The devil is in the details…or sometimes the rusty details if you will.  What do I mean by that….rusty details?

Have you ever come back into the thick of event season after a short break and sometimes you find yourself slip back into rote?  Doing the same thing that you’ve always done. If you’re honest with yourself…I bet you have. This happened to me recently and I thought I would share the experience with you here.  I got to a rehearsal after a short break from the season last year and I go into rote. What’s rote? Rote, according to Dictionary.com, is the mechanical or habitual repetition of something to be learned.  At rehearsal I stated to the bride about her father walking her down the aisle, except that her Father had actually passed. It’s her Stepfather walking her down the aisle. Confession time: we’re not always perfect.  We can get rusty. It’s SO IMPORTANT for us to practice, rehearse names and situations in advance.

I felt so embarrassed and profusely apologized in that moment.  What did I do after that? I went home and practiced and rehearsed.   I rehearsed the script, I went through the ceremony script to make sure that I had everything set. That day, I walked in, still slightly embarrassed from the previous day’s faux pas, but excited to represent my clients and perform their ceremony.  There was a special moment planned to honor the bride’s Father, and I was determined not to screw this up.  What happened next?  Swing by next week for the continuation of this story.
