The One Phone Call No DJ Ever Wants

June 1, 2019 by Michael Cordeiro
A few weeks ago I got an urgent call from my mom while setting up for a Saturday night event. She knows that every weekend I'm out doing events and doesn't call unless something major happened. I finished my set up, went back over details with the client real quick, put on cocktail music and stepped out to call my mom back. Then came the news no DJ wants to get at a gig. Someone in the family died. My uncle (age 57) had suddenly passed away from a brief illness. Of all the phone calls we can get while at an event, the death call is the worst. No one wants it or looks forward to it, but inevitably it will happen. One question: Are you prepa... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Modern Client Emails

May 30, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, dealing emails nowadays. I'm finding emails come in with questions like this, but they don't end with anything. So I get this a lot, I get one-line emails, I'm getting married, are you available on this date question, if you are, how much are you question. So I respond in kind, I speak the language of my clients, meaning if you send me a one-line email, I send you a one-line answer and my answers tend to always end in questions. I'm available for your date, how many hours do you need me question. Conversations in email have become more of texting than emails. The big, huge replies may still work in a lot of moments, but man, I'm finding more and more of my newer clients, the younger clients, especially you're speaking to me in emails just like it was a text. So I end up ... [read more]

Engage your gig’s guests through RequestNow!

May 23, 2019 by Mobile Beat
Today’s DJ industry is more competitive than it has ever been. Engaging with your guests and building your own personal brand are crucial to staying successful and relevant. Traditionally, song requests were seen as a pain. Guests would come over and shove their phone in your face, perhaps spilling their drink on you in the process. People were shouting at you while other guests felt intimidated to approach the DJ booth. There had to be a better way to connect. Cue RequestNow. RequestNow is a modern engagement platform that simplifies the song requesting process while also acting as a DJ branding and marketing tool. RequestNow allows guests to tex... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Ending Time On Your Receptions

May 23, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. These are wedding invitations and usually these are done maybe before you're even hired as the DJ, but one thing that wedding invitations can sometimes have is the end date of the reception. It might say, beginning at 5:00, ending at 10:00 or whatever it says. The reason I'm bringing this up is it was brought to my attention that whenever a party has an end time, it tends to give guests a little bit different perspective as to how long they should stay. And I noticed most of my events on the outside of the room will have an end time. See if you can get the end time taken away. So just reception to begin at 5:00 o'clock. That way there is no sense of when am I out of here? Because I think if you have it in your head that this ends in two or three hours, you gauge how long ... [read more]

The Great Ice Cream Truck Music Controversy

May 17, 2019 by Michael Cordeiro
It's no secret we live in a world where the "PC" culture runs amok. Everything is offensive. Everything "triggers" someone. Statues, flags and historical markers are being torn down and removed from public view at an alarming rate. Some for good reason and others for reasons a little more obscure. The music industry hasn't been exempt from scrutiny either. There has been much debate lately over playing songs from artists like Michael Jackson and R. Kelly - not because they wrote songs that are particularly offensive or racist, but because of actions in their personal lives. Whether or not they've actually been convicted of a crime in a court of law has no bearing on the court of public opinion. read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: $10 Adaptor For Your MacBook

May 16, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. You see this, this is the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter. It's that little thing right there or it's that little thing right there. I have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro has this, this old style and the MacBook Air has the new style. So for $9.99, I bought a converter, which now allows my old MacBook charger to charge my new MacBook Air, really cool. I do have a charger for both computers, but knowing that I can bring just one and charge both is awesome. I can't do it the other way. This charger won't work with this MacBook Pro, but that's okay, because now I've got one charger that charges both. So I can plug in one event and I'm good to go. So $9.98 saved me some Cache Money here, in under a minute.   ... [read more]

Trans Humanism and Cyborg DJ’s

May 3, 2019 by Michael Cordeiro
I've always been a big fan of science fiction and weird stuff. Recently I was hooked on a Netflix series called "Altered Carbon". In the future our "bodies" were nothing more than interchangeable meat suits because we had discovered how to down load the human conscious and transfer it from one shell to another. A new form of immortality. Instead of having a mortgage on a house and car payments, people would pay for "skins" to continue their existence.   Does that sound too far fetched? The Trans Humanist movement has grown tremendously over the last two decades. Their goal is the integration of technology with the human body. Scientists have... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Towel Over The Bumper.

May 2, 2019 by DJ Jay
Hey, everybody. DJ Jay here and I am at an event. This is part of a new series I'm doing called DJ tips in under 60 seconds. So got my van here, you see that really pretty towel, the point of the towel simply because I get dirt on the back of the van. Even if I just washed the van, it doesn't matter, because underneath there's dirt. So what I do is I keep a towel in the back, every time I get to a gig, I let myself put the towel over and bingo, I load in and out that way. So this is your first under 60-second tip. And just to show you, this is the actual van, this is the actual gear, you see everything in the background, speakers and then there's cases here and it's a nice case, the whole nine yards. So I'm now going to move it all over here onto my rock-n-roll cart and off I go. Thank you for watching. &n... [read more]
