DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Marking Your USB Cable, And Using A Different Color For Your HD.

July 19, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. Sometimes when using software, you may have to reboot, you may have to change things up, you may have to shut down the controller, you may have to shut down the computer. So I always use white for my hard drives and I go even further at putting that black mark so I know which side plugs in in case I'm looking at it, it's dark, I'm not sure, I don't want to jam anything, break a USB port. Could happen. So to get around it, again, put that little mark on it, but I know that this is the controller, this is the hard drive so I don't accidentally pull the hard drive in the middle of something if I have to reboot, if there's an issue and it's one more little anal thing I do, but it works really well for me. So DJ tips in under a minute, maybe run your hard drive on a white cabl... [read more]

FAQ – My DJ Mixer Settings Expanded By Request

June 18, 2018 by Brian S. Redd
I did a video yesterday on how I set up my mixing board, because there were some questions that people were asking me. And I showed them the 0db rule, which is what I follow to try to get the cleanest signal possible out of my mixing board, which sends the cleanest signal to my speakers, achieving the best sound that I can get out of my system. A lot of questions came up, a lot of people had some concerns. So I'm going to do a more in-depth video today to try to help you out. The first thing I'm going to do is on my master volume. I'm going to set it to 8 -- or 3:00 o'clock on the dial -- and I'm not going to touch it. Now let's put a track on. Now, I'm going to put a record on. But this could be anything. This could be an MP3, a music video, a CD, it doesn't matter. And notice, right here, these lights jump... [read more]

Your Ceremony Gear-The Essentials

June 1, 2018 by Joe Bunn
As DJs, we really just want to play music and make people dance. However, in recent years, we have become "sound guys". Less and less people are getting married in churches. I'm not sure if there are less people involved in church, or if they do it for convenience, but I'm betting over 35% of our wedding customers also book us to do the sound for their actual wedding ceremony. In this blog, let's talk about what you really need to have for your ceremony "rig". Good microphones. Hands down, this is where you need to spend your money. I can't sit here and write this and recommend anything but Shure or Sennheiser. If you have had success with another brand, good for you, but I know for a fact and from years of experience that these brands are tried and true. Currently, I am using only Sennheiser EW100 series ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: How To Angle Your Gear Up.

May 31, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. You see the gear, the gear's in the case. No big deal; right? But if you look, you can see the gear goes up at an angle. Let me show you from the side, a little easier to see, the gear's lifted up in the case. I've got Velcro on my power strip, I can move that around, but I've always liked the gear kind of coming up to me at an angle. This might give you a better shot, got a little lighting issue here, but you can see the gear's raised up. This is super easy to do and I'll show you how I did it and it's pretty inexpensive. Right underneath here on either side I have one of these. This is one of those cheap little doorstops you see, it's rubber, it's even treaded so the plastic grabs it. Now you see the whole case is off kilt, but there's the other one inside. So DJ tips ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: How To Find Your Next Phrase Point To Mix.

May 24, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, mixing. I'm going to link a video from Bobby [sic] Blends, Blends Gone Wild that I just watched. In the description on this one, that's the one you really want to watch. This is just getting you into it. If you're new to mixing, you've got to deal with 32 beats, 8 bars equal 1 phrase and you mix on phrases or begin your mixes on phrases. So what I did was I set cue points. I simply got to the very beginning of the song, set a cue point and then in Serato, ITCH or Scratch Live, I hit this button that says 32. That's a 32-beat loop. At the end of it, I set another cue point and it's just so I could listen through and see what it sounds like in each phrase. So if you're new and you can't find the phrase, can't find the spot to mix on, try this as a trick, start setting 32-be... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: How To Make Your Music Folders Into Crates In Serato.

May 10, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. How to make crates, which are in Serato/library at your intro where your music is stored. They're over here, you see one says "Hunger Games," one says "Creedence Clearwater." I want to show you how easy this is in Serato. So if I hit this button here, it says files, I get a dropdown window. So I've got my music, I'm going to go to my documents where I know I have some music. Let's see, here's one, artist. I'm going to take this one that says artist, I'm going to drag it down here to the bottom and you should see something crop up and there's a crate. So anything I drag from here as a folder down to here where it says plus, that crate is then created in that name. So if I click on it, here we go, this is a Promo Only disk and it's in under a minute.   ... [read more]
