DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Modern Client Emails

May 30, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, dealing emails nowadays. I'm finding emails come in with questions like this, but they don't end with anything. So I get this a lot, I get one-line emails, I'm getting married, are you available on this date question, if you are, how much are you question. So I respond in kind, I speak the language of my clients, meaning if you send me a one-line email, I send you a one-line answer and my answers tend to always end in questions. I'm available for your date, how many hours do you need me question. Conversations in email have become more of texting than emails. The big, huge replies may still work in a lot of moments, but man, I'm finding more and more of my newer clients, the younger clients, especially you're speaking to me in emails just like it was a text. So I end up ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Ending Time On Your Receptions

May 23, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. These are wedding invitations and usually these are done maybe before you're even hired as the DJ, but one thing that wedding invitations can sometimes have is the end date of the reception. It might say, beginning at 5:00, ending at 10:00 or whatever it says. The reason I'm bringing this up is it was brought to my attention that whenever a party has an end time, it tends to give guests a little bit different perspective as to how long they should stay. And I noticed most of my events on the outside of the room will have an end time. See if you can get the end time taken away. So just reception to begin at 5:00 o'clock. That way there is no sense of when am I out of here? Because I think if you have it in your head that this ends in two or three hours, you gauge how long ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: $10 Adaptor For Your MacBook

May 16, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. You see this, this is the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter. It's that little thing right there or it's that little thing right there. I have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro has this, this old style and the MacBook Air has the new style. So for $9.99, I bought a converter, which now allows my old MacBook charger to charge my new MacBook Air, really cool. I do have a charger for both computers, but knowing that I can bring just one and charge both is awesome. I can't do it the other way. This charger won't work with this MacBook Pro, but that's okay, because now I've got one charger that charges both. So I can plug in one event and I'm good to go. So $9.98 saved me some Cache Money here, in under a minute.   ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Towel Over The Bumper.

May 2, 2019 by DJ Jay
Hey, everybody. DJ Jay here and I am at an event. This is part of a new series I'm doing called DJ tips in under 60 seconds. So got my van here, you see that really pretty towel, the point of the towel simply because I get dirt on the back of the van. Even if I just washed the van, it doesn't matter, because underneath there's dirt. So what I do is I keep a towel in the back, every time I get to a gig, I let myself put the towel over and bingo, I load in and out that way. So this is your first under 60-second tip. And just to show you, this is the actual van, this is the actual gear, you see everything in the background, speakers and then there's cases here and it's a nice case, the whole nine yards. So I'm now going to move it all over here onto my rock-n-roll cart and off I go. Thank you for watching. &n... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Drinks For A Wedding

April 25, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. Sixty-seconds or less tip. This is my beverages of the evening, I've got a Rock Star sugar free, two Powerades, the reason being that I don't eat at weddings. I'm not saying that you shouldn't eat at weddings; I'm saying I don't. Because I don't. I bring things like Powerade that has electrolytes and carbs and all that good stuff with me. I find it just lets me focus, stay hydrated, the whole nine yards. Now, if you eat during your weddings, cool, go eat. I just don't, because I'm working through dinner, I'm picking different music to try to bring the crowd kind of up towards the end of the meal and it's just my thing. I'd be happy to explain the incident that happened about 10 years ago when I was eating out of the room and the music stopped. So since then, no eating for me. Do what you would like... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Organizing Music For A Wedding

April 18, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. Another quick tip, I use Serato ITCH and as you can see over here, I make crates for dates, meaning today's wedding is the bottom crate, it says 6-9-12 and this is the crate. Now, the other thing I do is I set it up so I put a color next to the songs that are important. These are all songs that I know I have to play for certain things later in the night, cake, garter, bouquet, things like that. So I find it easiest so I can find them in an instant within the crate. Just a quick 60 second or less tip from me, DJ Jay. So if you find that helpful, do it. Thank you.   ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Using Your Headphones As A Microphone

April 11, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. These are headphones, this is your DJ tip in under 60 seconds. I have the headphones plugged in, but if you look, you'll see they're actually plugged into the microphone. So I'm going to go up here, I'm going to turn the microphone on, I'm going to turn the volume up, I'm going to take my headphones, check one, one, check, one, test, one, one. You can actually use your headphones as a microphone in an emergency. It will not sound as good, but you can use it as a microphone. So if you run into problems, your mike goes out, you don't have a mike, plug your headphones into your mike jack as long as it's quarter-inch or combo jack. So that's the tip of the day in under 60 seconds. Thank you for watching. ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Power Cable With Light.

April 4, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under 60 seconds, AKA one minute. This is a yellow power cord. A lot of times I get events where I'm outside or I have to go over grass or sidewalks or something. And even inside if it's too far and it's going to get in the way of people, I love this cord, because black and yellow is caution and I use black Gaff tape. Now, the beauty of this cord is this, and I'll move into a little bit of the darkness so you'll see, when this cord gets power, this lights up. So if I'm outside and I plug into some weird power supply behind someplace through the bushes, through the trees, I know immediately if I have power. Then I can start stringing. So my initial cable I love having this, again, because it's yellow and because it's my power check. So get a yellow cable with power check. Thank you for wa... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Have Something That You Bring To All Events.

March 28, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. Another DJ tip in under a minute. This is a black binder, folder, whatever you want to call it. I've had it for about 10, 11 years and it's the one item that goes to every meeting, every wedding, every party, every event, because I carry all my music in it, my main hard drive, my backup's in another bag and then I have folders. If you can see, that's today's date and inside I have a CD for the ceremony. Yes, I'm using a CD. I have a full schedule of events, I have music requests that the bride and groom have handwritten and given to me and I have the timeline that I wrote for the bride and groom and it's got all my notes on it, everything I have to do and then I have my wedding form that I fill out with all my clients. If you have one item that you can carry everything in so you never go without so... [read more]
