DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Buy Speaker Covers To Protect Your Speakers.

March 14, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under 60 seconds. This is my speaker, trying to show you all the sides of it. Show you the shape it's in, because it looks absolutely brand new and it's not, it's two years old. If you look up close, you don't see any marks or anything. That's because I spent money on these. These are bags. They didn't have bags when I bought my speakers. So I had these made by a company called Tuki. They zip, they're water resistant, they're padded and the speakers go in them at every event. So they go from the garage to the van, out of the van, into the gig, out of the bag and back in the bag, back in the van, back in the garage. So if you don't have bags, get bags for speakers, they'll thank you for it, they will look good and new and people will be impressed with your appearance, under 60 seconds.... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Use Gaff Tape Not Duct Tape.

March 7, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tip in under 60 seconds, one minute. This is duct tape. This is what you use when working on heating and cooling ducts, d-u-c-t. This is Gaff tape. It says right inside: Gaff. This is what you use when you're a professional DJ, because it doesn't leave residues, it won't mark up the floor, it won't markup marble, it won't markup wood and it won't stick or leave anything behind. I've probably done four weddings this year where I've been told before they saw the tape, we only allow Gaff tape, can't use duct tape, it sticks and leaves residue. When I was first starting out, yes, I used duct tape, then I became pro and I talked to the right people and they guided me and said, no, use Gaff tape, it's good for cables, won't leave residue. So DJ tips in under a minute, use real Gaff tape. Thank you. ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Check Your MP3 Files.

February 28, 2019 by DJ Jay
DJ tips in under a minute. You see these things scrolling past on the screen, these are songs. They are in a program called MP3 Validator. And what this is doing is it's going through and looking and if it sees a problem, it will log it. If it's not a problem, it will say okay. Then I can set it to go back in and fix, if possible, the files that it has found are corrupted. It could be anything from the title, the ID3 tags, what setup as far as the encoding was concerned. I've had issues with certain sites, buying tracks from then and then scanning them and seeing a problem and it will come up on this, because there are certain tracks I've bought on certain sites. There is no problem, just when they were encoded with LAME, it gave a problem. So MP3 Validator, go to Google, find it, it's a free software, I'll ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Free Software For Editting Music.

February 21, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. This is a free program called Audacity and I use it to do edits. And what I'm doing right here is I'm cutting out the intro, I have a track. So now I've saved the track, now I'm going to go to the beginning of the track and I've cut out that intro. I can view the track, I can make the wave smaller, I can cut out different bits and pieces, I can add transitions, I can add loops and effects, I can do whatever I want. You can import your audio, you can have fadeouts, you have a bunch of different effects, you can put loops, you can have all these effects added when you put a section in, kind of hard to see. I'll put a link in the description where you can download it, but this is free. It looks similar to other programs that you can spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on,... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Switch The Parents Seats To The Other Side.

February 14, 2019 by DJ Jay
DJ tips in under a minute. Here we go, I'm at a wedding. I'm up here where the wedding will take place. So as you know, looking out, this is the groom's side, that's the bride's side. We're going to switch that today. We're going to have the bride's parents sit here on what would be my left side and the groom's parents sit here on what would be my right side. Why? Because that way the groom's parents will see the groom, the bride's parents will see the bride. Try this at your next wedding. Tips in under a minute, bringing you redoing the wedding setup. So again, put the bride's parents at the front of the groom's section and the groom's parents at the front of the bride's section. You end up with the fact that now they're looking at the face of their loved ones and not at their backs. So we're going to try it... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: A Must Have Piece Of Gear

January 31, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. It's rare that I do brands, but you need to have a backup handheld mike and I've got to tell you, this is by far the best mike you can get your hands on for that. This is the Shure SM58. I'm going to go on record and say I don't use Shure mikes for my wireless. This mike is 10 years old, it has a couple of little scratches on it, no big deal. I've replaced this screen once, I think it was a $7.00 investment. These mikes are usually somewhere in the area of $50 to $100, but it's a quality mike, it won't go down. I think I said, if I didn't, this is about 10 years old, works great, sounds great and if you need to get a backup mike, just have this. It's what pros use, you see it on stage everywhere. If you deal with any singers at any events, they're not going to have an iss... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Dress Up For Set Up.

January 24, 2019 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. It's going to be hard to see here. So I'm going to turn the camera on me. This is what I am wearing, I am prepping up for my wedding. As you can see, I have black shoes, black pants and then a striped shirt. The point is I have seen videos on YouTube here with DJs wearing a muscle shirt, plain grungy t-shirt, jeans when they're prepping up. I personally think you should strive to look a little better. You're going to have somebody approach you and say, are you the DJ? And when you do, you want to at least look and appear professional. I could get a t-shirt, but I think a button shirt like this is a little better. If you have a polo shirt with your company name on it, by all means go with that. So again, quick DJ tip in under a minute, dress appropriately when loading up y... [read more]

DJ Tips in under a minute: bring sw and drivers on a separate flash drive.

January 17, 2019 by DJ Jay
DJ tips in under a minute. This is a flash drive. This has music for my event on it as well as on my main hard drive. My wedding last night, the photo booth operator couldn't start for an hour and 15 minutes, because the drivers wouldn't pick up from the printer to their laptop. So an hour and 15 minutes after they were supposed to start, they started. And I said, do you have the drivers? And they said, we have to download them from the Internet. If you use software, if you have drivers for your controller or players, put them on this, I have a control disk for Serato and Traktor on this. Even though I don't use Scratch Live, I have the tone. So if I went to a gig, somebody had forgot their CDs, at least I can plug this in, hopefully CDJs that link and I have a control tone. I also have a copy of ITCH on this... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Wear All Black

January 10, 2019 by DJ Jay
DJ tips in under a minute. We've had some issues in the last week or two with vendors who have spilled stuff. So try this, wear all black, black shirt, black pants, black shoes. I used to wear an all-black ensemble with a black tie, but I switched gears and recently went with the black and white striped thinner tie to be more fashionable, because I am not fashionable. So if you wear gray, white, beige, something like that, you know it looks good, I'm not saying it doesn't and I'm certainly not here to tell you what to do, but I'm just making a suggestion as are all DJ tips in under a minute, the suggestion is try something new. If you haven't tried all black, try all black, black shirt, black pants and whatever tie you would like. I just -- I left the tux scene about 12 years ago and went to all black about 1... [read more]
