DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Favorite Piece Of Gear, Rock N Roller Cart.

August 16, 2018 by DJ Jay
DJ tips in under a minute. People often ask me the best piece of gear I own, expecting me to say a CDJ or a DJM or something, but believe it or not, it's right there, that is my rock and rock cart. It is an older one, I think this is about four or five years old and as you can see, it's all folded up nice, it's a small footprint, but the handles come up and the whole things extends out to twice that length. I can carry my two JBL speakers, my coffin, two speaker stands and a bag and do an event in one trip. This has been a lifesaver, because it fits right in the front seat of the car, folds out, does its job. And I think at expo, I'm going to get a new one, because this is the older style with the actual tires that take air, the new ones are hard plastic. So save your back, save your agro, don't rely on hote... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Cake Table Pin Spot Idea.

August 9, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, Par can, one of the O-clamps and speaker stand. Just about every single wedding I do some of this gear gets left in the garage, but after speaking with DJ Mikey Mike doing it from scratch and direct sounds, he gave me an idea that I have heard about before, but haven't tried that I'm going to probably this weekend, that light and that speaker stand are now going to become a cake table pin spot. That's right, I'm going to go set it up, see how it looks and try it out and then I'm going to offer it as a little bit of either an upgrade to my clients or maybe even a little freebie, just a little throw in for them being cool and me needing a little bargaining tool. But I'm thinking this is probably a $50 to $100 idea. So you've got a spot, you've got a stand, you've got a cake... [read more]

August 2, 2018 by DJ Jay
I just wanted to show this real quick, I am using, see up there, ITCH and I'm just playing some tracks and as you can see up here, I have the record DJ facts sampler and if you weren't aware, I just want to show you a video. So here is Video-SL in ITCH. So as you see, I'm now running video in ITCH. So if you have an ITCH controller, you have ITCH, you can run Video-SL or as I believe it's now being called Serato Video. So just wanted to show you that real quick. I'll do some tutorials down the road, but just wanted to show you. It is now possible, if you haven't already seen it, to run video on your ITCH controller. Kind of a game changer if you've got video and you were thinking about going into it and you already have a controller similar to this one. So DJ Jay just showing you real quick the Video-SL or ag... DJ Tips In Under A Minute: PRACTICE.

July 26, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. I've already done record yourself and I've already done record your voice. It's just practicing. You should be practicing. How much, completely up to you. How often, completely up to you. But it's a balmy Tuesday night here and I wanted to start doing some mixes. I've got some time. So I'm messing around, but I'm recording it, playing it back. It's a little time consuming, but after you listen to it, you start to pick up where your break should've been, I could've transitioned this mix right here a lot better. So that's something I'll go back and practice over. But you know what, a couple hours a week, 20 hours a week, whatever you feel comfortable with, but actually record your mix, listen to it back and see where your mistakes are or see if it's great and if it's great,... DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Marking Your USB Cable, And Using A Different Color For Your HD.

July 19, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. Sometimes when using software, you may have to reboot, you may have to change things up, you may have to shut down the controller, you may have to shut down the computer. So I always use white for my hard drives and I go even further at putting that black mark so I know which side plugs in in case I'm looking at it, it's dark, I'm not sure, I don't want to jam anything, break a USB port. Could happen. So to get around it, again, put that little mark on it, but I know that this is the controller, this is the hard drive so I don't accidentally pull the hard drive in the middle of something if I have to reboot, if there's an issue and it's one more little anal thing I do, but it works really well for me. So DJ tips in under a minute, maybe run your hard drive on a white cabl... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Things You Need To Survive A DJ Show.

July 5, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. Going to the DJ expo or any show, carry a lot of this, you shake a lot of hands. The other thing is I don't want to take them out, but in my ears are earplugs and I'm going to show you why. It's actually not too loud right here and you'll see in one second that that's all about to change for the worse. So make sure you bring earplugs or else you will go deaf. It is the competition as to who can be the loudest at these shows. So bring earplugs. Come, but bring earplugs. You can get the custom ones that are really good or even the inexpensive ones, just get them. DJ tips, if you can still hear me, in under a minute. ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: The Right Length For Your Tie.

June 28, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. I'm not the most fashion guy as you see, I have my tie. Hopefully this is adjusting, but see where the tie stops right here where my hand is? The belt. Tie is supposed to touch the belt. So I have to adjust my belt so this doesn't stick out, but I've seen some pictures lately of DJs with jackets that look very sharp. The jacket cuts the tie, then they take the jacket off and the tie is up here. You don't want that, you want the tie to come down just touch the belt. I think probably perfect would be that, but think halfway you're good. Anything over the belt, to me, is too long. If the tie goes to there, too long. So I stand up straight with my tie, I'm hitting right where I want to hit right there on the belt. So an odd DJ tips in under a minute from a non-fashion guy, b... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Scrim King Table Topper To Stop Your Table From Being A Bar.

June 21, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. Again, live here at expo. We've got totem wraps, you have speaker stand covers, doubles, singles, triples, black, white, but the cool thing here is this, this is a table topper. It goes around your six-foot table. So when people go to put their drinks, oh, I can't, because there's something in the way. I think this is awesome. I'm getting one, because I'm sick of people putting their drinks on my table. And see, you can. So you cover your table up with this beautiful item black or white, unzips from a company called Skrim King, just skrimking.com, I'll put it in the description. But again, a great way to get rid of the drinks and problems on your table, Skrim King table topper, in under a minute.   ... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Facebook DJ Groups.

June 7, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, Facebook. Yeah, that place. So a lot of DJ groups, groups about complaining, and sharing, and you know you're a DJ, and playlists, and support, and against bullying, and outreaching, and channels, and DIY, and mobile, awesome. Join a group, create a group, do something, but just be careful, because more and more these groups kind of become somebody that started its place to run and give their opinion on things and if you can draw from it, awesome, if you can learn from it, better, but kind of take it with a grain of salt. When they first started, I was like this is the end of it, this is awesome, this is great, but the more I use them the more I'm like, I don't know. So DJ tips in under a minute, Facebook, join a group or start a group, but be in a group. Out.   ... [read more]
