How to Do Social Media in 2019

June 12, 2019 by Vanessa Joy
In the past six months my business has seen $65,000+ of bookings come directly from social media. That’s nothing to sneeze at. (I’m on a plane writing this, and as I typed “sneeze” someone sneezed. New superpower? Maybe!). So, I’ve decided to invest more of my efforts in social media. If you have too it’s hard to figure out where to start and what’s working. My friends over at Animoto let me in on their yearly social media survey of 500 marketers and 1,000 consumers. Let me tell you, this information is the perfect springboard to where I’m going to start my 2019 strategy. Here are... [read more]

3 Simple Steps for Creating (And Maintaining) Happy Wedding Clients

October 5, 2018 by Vanessa Joy

CREATE HAPPY WEDDING CLIENTS

We’ve all been there. The stress, the anxiety, and heartbreak you feel when one of your clients is upset with you, or worse, is flat-out angry and lashing out. If you haven’t had a client turn from Jekyll to Hyde, then consider yourself lucky. Fortunately, we can head off clients problems before they start by following 3 easy steps to maintaining client satisfaction.

SEE THE RED FLAGS

Hindsight is 20-20 so learning to spot a problem client before they become a client can be tricky, but it’ll save both you and your client a lot of misery later on. You have to decide what the red flags are for you because they’re not necessarily the same for everyone. For example, some DJs might consider it a problem client if they are handed a list of 100 songs she dema... [read more]

5 Things To Let Go Of For Success In Your Business

September 26, 2018 by Vanessa Joy
“Stop the glorification of busy.” This was a quote I recently stumbled across and I absolutely love it. It’s so funny to me in this world, and in today’s culture, that busy equals important. In my opinion, being too busy doesn’t mean important. It means I’m sacrificing things like friends, family, health, exercise, vacations, and sanity time; all the things that we’re meant to enjoy in life. Why is it that we find the need to keep ourselves busy? Even if we’re not talking about entrepreneurs, the general population thinks this as well. Just look at anybody who’s sitting down in a doctor’s office, or even walking down the street. Everyone likes to look busy, and we do this now in today’s culture by being on our phones whenever we have a minute solitary, s... [read more]

4 Time Saving Apps for DJs

September 2, 2018 by Vanessa Joy
Running a business has so much to do with work-life balance and managing your time. It is, in fact, key to be good at it so that you can do more of what you became a photographer to do; shoot. With life constantly throwing new tasks at us, new social media sites to keep up with and, hopefully, more clients to respond to, it can be very overwhelming. Finding shortcuts are crucial to managing it all. Below are 4 apps that I personally use in my wedding photography business that you’ll absolutely thank me for later.

Every time I see a new social media site I simply want to jump off the bridge (but don’t have the time to drive to the nearest one). There’s another social media venue for me to keep up on? As if Pinterest, Google+, Google Pages, read more]

From doing what You HATE to doing what You LOVE

September 2, 2018 by Vanessa Joy
Ok, so maybe I didn’t hate being an Elementary School Spanish teacher. But waking up extra early to answer e-mails before running to school and then coming home covered in chalk, just to walk right to my computer and start working the night shift, was not my ideal way of spending my first year of marriage. My poor husband would greet me at the door, super excited to see me (he was already a full-time wedding cinematographer). I’d have to do my best to smile through the anxious thoughts over how long the hello would take. “Does the hug need to be this long? I’ve got work to do!” “Weekend warriors” is the cliché term for us crazy event professional who know nothing of a 40 hour workweek or what it’s like to attend a Memorial Day BBQ. At least not one where we’re not tired... [read more]

3 Must Have Social Media Tips

August 30, 2018 by Vanessa Joy
One of my favorite quotes comes from Gary Vaynerchuk’s book Jab, Jab, Jab Right Hook. It is nestled in the first part of the addendum to the book at the end. The addendum is there because after he finished writing an entire book on social media and how to use it wisely, Instagram released video posting capabilities. This release pretty much made his book instantly obsolete before it was even published. Now, he could have complained about it. He may have even thrown his newly finished manuscript on the floor. But what he ultimately decided to do about it is write the addendum, giving more advice and tips on Instagram’s video function. He started it with this attitude: <... [read more]

How to define success in your business

August 2, 2018 by Vanessa Joy
I believe, when you’re not taking the time to identify your why and where, you’re setting yourself up to waste time running in circles and ultimately chase the wind. It truly is different for everyone. We all have a different vision for our life long-term. Some kind of idea of what we’d like our lives to look like, even if it’s only in small pockets of clarity. If you want to start a business, I don’t think you need to make a business plan. Business plans can take too long to create, stifle creativity, and get outdated too often. But, you need business goals to know what you’re working toward. To find out where you want to go, you have to figure out for yourself what success looks like to you. ... [read more]

3 Secrets to Branding Your Business

July 26, 2018 by Vanessa Joy
I remember one of my first introductions to branding. I was sitting in a workshop and the Nike logo popped up on the screen and then Mercedes and then Coca-Cola. It’s the most common way to explain branding. It is showing popular logos, letting the audience realize they have a connection to that logo, good or bad, and therefore creating a connection to that company and their product. That is branding, but that’s not all that branding is. People’s lives are becoming more open and consumers more educated on what a solid business brand should look like. Consumers are starting to have a more critical eye and expect a higher level of experience when spending their money. Starbucks will always redo a bad drink. Victoria’s Secret will wrap your purchases like ... [read more]

Keys to a Beautiful Work/Life Balance

July 12, 2018 by Vanessa Joy
One winter, I had the incredible experience of being able to spend six weeks in Brazil. It was the first of my Tim Ferris style mini-retirements, where I worked remotely and even learned a good bit of Portuguese. In Brazil, there’s an expression. Like most foreign language expressions, a lot gets lost in translation. But here it goes: Shall I make a coffee, or make a life? The back-story behind it is a boy falls in love with a girl and wants to know their future. Should he plan just for her to come over for coffee and crumpets? Or, should he plan for her being there every day for ... [read more]

Marketing to Millennials

June 26, 2018 by Vanessa Joy
Millennial just might sounds like the bad “M” word to you, but now-a-days it takes up a huge part of the market. If you’re a wedding DJ, it’s your primary market. So how do you speak the Millennial language? Being a NYC wedding photographer since about 2002, I’ve watched marketing methods change over the years, and I’ve gone through countless trial-and-error campaigns to find the success that I have now. I’m going to spare you all of the fluff in this article and get right down to what works. Videos on social media works. Why? Millennials are on social media and v... [read more]
