Please Don’t Stop the By:Geoff Short

February 9, 2013 by CHAUVET DJ
"Thou Dost Protest Too Much..." - William Shakespeare The DJ community seems to spend a lot of time figuring out ways to market itself as an industry whose practitioners are far more than button pushing music players. And indeed it should. DJs - the professional ones, anyway - are more than music providers. We are (or strive to be) Masters of Ceremony, Event Coordinators, Planners, Lighting Designers, Technicians, etc. You know the list well. This "swiss army knife" branding is important in the effort to elevate our industry in the eyes of clients. But somewhere alo... [read more]

The DJ Detective By:Geoff Short

February 5, 2013 by CHAUVET DJ
Sometimes as an artist, I feel like Sherlock Holmes. I have to be a sleuth searching for clues to solve the case of whatever musical project I'm working on at the time. I'm currently directing a community theatre production of the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" here in Cleveland. As a director, it's critical to get as close to knowing every detail of every measure of music and every scene as possible. Having that clear understanding of the script is the only way to de... Mixer’s Block By:Geoff Short

January 25, 2013 by CHAUVET DJ
Sometimes I know it's TIME to write something - an article, a blog, an email - I just don't know WHAT to write. Writer's Block has a nasty habit of rearing its ugly head at the most inconvenient times. The same thing can happen when I'm DJing, trying to figure out what to play and what to creatively mix together. One of the most well-known techniques for breaking the grip of writer's block is to just start writing. Anything. Stream of consciousness nonsense if that's what comes out, but the key is to just ... Welcome to Rehab By:Geoff Short

January 17, 2013 by CHAUVET DJ
Hi. I'm Geoff and I'm a Gear-a-holic. I love gear. I've always been obsessed with anything that has lots of blinking lights and buttons to push. We DJs talk about gear, we drool over gear in music stores and online catalogs. And of course, we buy gear. Lots of it. There's nothing like the rush of getting that package from the UPS guy. It's here! It's here! That expensive thing that I can't afford and really don't need but that is filling up an emotional void somewhere deep inside me! We're addicted brothers and sisters. Not to offend o... [read more]

Panic Button By:Geoff Short

December 30, 2012 by CHAUVET DJ
Any good DJ worth his weight in MP3s has a back-up plan in case Murphy's Law kicks in at a gig. There's a ton of advice available about back-up plans. Not so much about the psychological impact of DJ panic when things go wrong. Panic kills. I was a lifeguard throughout high school and college. We learned the first option to save someone drowning is to reach something long to them and pull them to safety. If you approach a drowning person who is panicked they will most likely drag you down with them. On a gig, panic can drown the event as quickly as a fl... [read more]

December 27, 2012 by CHAUVET DJ
Everyone can use a little inspiration. Especially those of us in the entertainment business who need to continually find creative ways to stimulate audiences. But it's easy to fall into the rut of time-worn habits.  We could all use a creative makeover to do things differently sometimes. If your eyes and mind are open enough you can discover new ... [read more]
