DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Measure And Mark Off Your Speaker Stands.

January 4, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, speaker stands, we all have them, we all use them, but I took out this and then this, a silver sharpie today and decided I'm sick of these things, guess working where they're supposed to be. So I measured out where I would normally have them on my events and just put markings every foot. So I don't know if you can really make that one out, but there is -- yeah, there it is and then down here. And that way next time I do an event, I'll know that the stands are the exact same height, exact same size. Maybe your speaker stands come with sort of markings throughout, mine didn't and don't and I just want them to look the same. So DJ tips in under a minute, measure and mark out your stands every foot or so that you can always have them be the same height. In under a minute. read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Use Your Back-up Gear To Make Sure It’s In Good Shape.

December 29, 2017 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. This is my backup laptop and just finished a gig. Here's the end of my gig. Here are the peeps, that's the groom, that's the bride over there and I used it for the entire gig. So the tip is simply use your backup gear. It's no point in leaving it in the bag at your gig if you don't know it's going to run. So I take it out and run it occasionally. You've probably seen most of my gig logs and most of my things on a MacBook Pro, but this is my HP that I use as my backup. And I dawned on me about a week ago, what if the backup doesn't work at a gig. So I decided I would use my backup this week and verify that everything was copasetic. So the point of this video is simply take your backup rig and run it, check it and make sure it works, make sure everything's good to go so yo... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Ceiling Lighting As A New Add On.

December 21, 2017 by DJ Jay
DJ tips in under a minute, I've heard about this from about four different DJs and I have yet to do it myself, but I'm going to try it soon. This is ceiling lighting. We do uplighting around the room, but this is actually purposeful lighting on the ceiling. So what I'm going to end up doing is taking a T-bar and probably putting between six and eight Par cans on it and just send it up to the ceiling, angle each one, try to get as much light out of the ceiling as I can, either play off the bride and groom's colors or do kind of a sky effect. Maybe do some blues, throw an amber in there, just different colors and make it look cool. People do look up. I mean, I send my Revo 3 on the ceiling all the time for dancing and I want more, I want something a little bit different. So this is just an example I found onli... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Sell The Add On Before You Buy It.

December 14, 2017 by DJ Jay
DJ tips in under a minute. Had a conversation this morning with my man Pulse at Tall Music, DJ Pulse, Christian, another demonstrator with Pioneer, the man and we were talking about uplighting and selling and one of the things that I found works really well is not only doing a site inspection towards the actual day, but you know what, contact clients in front, meaning clients that you have in the next four months, five months, six months a year and see where they are with lighting. If you want to get into uplighting, you need to know that you can sell it and the best way to know you can sell it is to have clients in the future buy it already. So let's say you want to buy 10 lights, it's going to cost you $1,000 for numbers, call your clients and offer them a now special. You're going to offer them 10 uplights... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Group Dance After The First Dance With A Fast Song.

December 7, 2017 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, this is a group dance. The way I do my group dances, I do them right after the first dance, if I do the first dance up front. So the secret of success with this is simply to have the group invited out on the dance floor about three-quarters of the way through the first dance. So start the first dance, bride and groom come out, they dance. If the song is three minutes long and about 2:30, invite the group out to join them. Once the group comes out, they'll dance to the slow song, then start mixing in your fast song, works about 99.9 percent of the time for me. And you do it early enough so the group leaves thinking, wow, we already danced, we haven't even eaten yet. So it's a great little trick to do at weddings to kind of motivate people, get people going and also make yo... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Work Smarter Not Harder Part 1.

November 30, 2017 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, this is going to be a two-part tip. First part is work smarter, not harder. This is what my rig looks like now, I have a wedding today for 60 people and this is what I'm bringing. There's three bags that won't leave the car, they're the backup stuff, that's my ceremony speaker, these are my mains, these are the lights that go on poles, that is my ceremony system backup, that is my main rig, wireless, speaker stands, DJ skirts, crane stand and main bag that you see down there with the red. So I'm showing you this now as to what I do and what I bring and of course, the rock-n-roll cart, can't forget that. But I'm going to do a second video of this over the weekend showing you how I've cleaned it up and worked smarter, not harder. So part one of two, DJ tips in under a minut... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Dj Intelligence For Your Clients Music Requests.

November 23, 2017 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, this is something I use. This is DJ Intelligence and I actually have to update my account, nine days. I have been using this now for about seven years and the big aspect of it for me is here, this is client log-ins and this allows me to open up an account for all of my clients, send an email to them and let them pick their music online. So it has a lot of cool features. The biggest one I use is the planning, the availability checker and the music site. So again, this is something that you can integrate into your business. I know there's some other ones, GigBuilder and I think DJweb and Pro. I haven't used those and I don't know much about them. So I'm not going to really speak about them, but this is one I have been using for a long time. It's a good tool and it's DJ Int... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: My Time Line That Goes To Every Wedding.

November 16, 2017 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, this is a timeline. Every meeting I have I write out notes and I run by the bride and groom what their schedule is and a lot of times I integrate with them what they want, do they want to have a grand entrance, do they want to have themselves join the cocktail hour, are we doing father/daughter, mother/son? This is an early one, this would be copy two. Every time I update it, I make a new copy. Even if I have an onsite or an outside coordinator, I think it's imperative that the DJ knows what's going on. Once these are finished, they get the music put in them. So that way if there's any questions, if something were to happen to me, I could hand this off to another DJ in the file and say, here you go, here's their timeline. This would also have another piece that would giv... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Get Cables And Cords In Different Colors For Different Needs.

November 9, 2017 by DJ Jay
Now, DJ tips in under a minute, I know it's dark in here, but hopefully you can see that, that's my extension cord today. It carries three plugs on it. And again, sorry it's dark, but I knew I was doing white pipe and drape today. So to make things look better behind it, all you can pick up is the white cable, which is actually right there blending in with the pipe and drape. So if you know you've got to do something like this where there's going to be white around the room, invest in a couple of white cables. Most of mine are black, I've got a yellow, I've got orange, I've got green, I've got all the colors of the rainbow, but in a case like this, I wanted to be able to really melt in with the pipe and drape. So the other thing is ask them to turn the lights down. Matt, the onsite here, has been awesome abou... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Use Odd Number Lights And Light Up Areas That Normally Are Ignored.

November 2, 2017 by DJ Jay
DJ tips in under a minute from a wedding, three lights, one, two, three. I talked to a lighting designer and a home designer and they both said, work in odd numbers. It's more impactful and it draws the eyes. So I have three lights today down the hallway, not four as I would normally do. So the tip is work in odd numbers, but also, try to find spaces that may not normally get lit up. As you can see, I'm going out into the main wedding area. This wall will stay here, but this wall will move and then we'll have everyone come inside. So if they go down this hallway towards the bathrooms, I want to give them an opportunity to pick up some of the light that's in the room. And again, these are tips that I've picked up from talking to lighting designers and other staffing at events as to what looks really sharp a... [read more]
