DJ Tips In Under A Minute Always Ask If The Bride And Groom Can Be Used As A Referral.

March 29, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. [inaudible] and the bride, people leaving the wedding. I went up at the end of the night and said, how was everything? Awesome. Can I put you down as a reference and referral? And her immediate comment to me was, yes. So at the end of your night, go to your clients, bust your butt all night for them and then say to them, can I put you down as a reference and a referral? And when they say yes to you, which they will, then say, can I send you a WeddingWire review so you can keep your reviews up-to-date, because if you make your client's day, they will help you in the future. So again, at the end of the night, go to your clients and say, how was everything? It was great? Great. Can I put you down as a reference? When they say yes, make sure you send them a WeddingWire follow... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Check For New Firmware Updates For Your Gear.

March 22, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. If you have a controller and you use software, chances are you had to give them your email address and a password so that they can get in touch with you when they have new versions. Well, this is a page for a controller called the DDJ-ERGO. As you can see, it's got all this stuff, it's got a TSI file for mini-mapping, for a Traktor and it's got the driver right there. It also has updates. So Mac firmware updates, Windows firmware update. If you're using a controller, make sure you're checking for firmware updates. You may not get an email from the DJ company that supports your controller, but occasionally they find fixes for things and they release these things called firmwares. So what you'd end up doing is downloading this and loading it onto your controller. So check y... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: How People Should Use The Microphone.

March 15, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, microphone. At a gig right now and I will have two people later on toasting. And what I will do is I will -- as I say at every wedding, please hold the microphone here or here or here or here. Please don't hold the microphone down here like a pointer or over there showing people in the crowd. Do this at your weddings, do this at your events, go over to whoever's going to speak on your microphone and just simply say to them, let me give you a heads-up, it's this kind of microphone, it's already turned on, this one has the power button right there if you can see that at the base, doesn't have anything on the side. The other thing is please don't tap the microphone. Don't sit here, is this on? It is on, I gave it to you on, hold it about an inch and a half, two inches from y... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Finding Songs With Serato SSL/Itch.

March 8, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, we're back in prepping for a wedding. So at a wedding this weekend, I'm setting up my music, I've got my crates, I've got my tracks, but a lot of times I like to burn tracks from within my crates onto a separate drive, like a flash drive so I know I have everything that's really important to the bride and groom. So what I would do in the past is simply open up my hard drive, then search the hard drive and that can take a while, because there's 20-some-odd thousand songs on the hard drive. But I learned a cool trick, the trick is this, you have your keyboard, so you hit control-R, watch what happens, boom, you get the location of the song. It actually comes up and shows you where it is. So now you can go into the song, right-click the track, copy it, drag it to something o... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Use A Movie Intro Song To Get Your Crowds Attention Before Speaking.

March 1, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. You're about to speak at a wedding, you're about to speak at an event, people are chit-chatting, it's cocktail hour, whatever the case might be. It's not always enough to get on the mike and start to speak, because people traditionally don't hear the first 10 seconds of what you say, it's just human nature. So I saw this in Las Vegas at a seminar and if I remember who gave the seminar, I will credit them. I think it was Peter Merry, though, but he said, how about starting off with a song that elicits that sort of response from people? And he mentioned this one. So next time you're doing a wedding or an event, try this, right before you have to speak on the mike, play the THX jet sound effect. People know it means something is happening, something's coming and they're liab... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: 26 Million Songs That You Have Access To.

February 22, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. It now offers 28 million songs, videos and apps. So let's say there's a million apps, minus that out. Videos, let's say there's six million videos just for numbers, because I'm not positive, let's say it's a safe bet that iTunes has 20 million songs in it, the point is I'm not going to tell people how many songs I have anymore. I think my role as their DJ is to make sure I have the right songs, because anyone with an iPhone or an iPad or anything else can get access to these songs. So telling your clients, I bring 10,000 songs, I have 300,000 songs, I have a million songs, I don't think it shows value anymore. I think it just shows that you've got a lot of music. If you don't know what track to play next, it doesn't matter what you have. So start to focus on the right son... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Watch Pricing Items That Create Value To A Client

February 15, 2018 by DJ Jay
DJ tips in under a minute, when you're doing something like lighting, be careful about price quotes. I know that most people want to know how much something costs, it just makes sense, but if you give somebody a price and it's per item, what you're doing is you're placing value on it that can now be beaten. Another DJ can come along and say, I do lighting for $20 a light with no minimum or they can come up with a better package. You should try to let your clients know, let's look at the room, let's do a site inspection, bring a couple of lights with you, plug them in and show the client what it looks like. That way you're giving a better value. Or at this price, you may want to include them. If you're getting your fee as a DJ to say to a client, that includes four lights. In this case, that would be $100 in c... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Help With And Or Always Check The Floor Plan For Your Events.

February 8, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, imagine this is the room you're going to be working, this big square in the middle is the dance floor. As you can see, we have tables all the way around the room and right over there look everyone, the DJ. So I guess you could put a speaker here and shoot through and one here and then point them straight, I guess so you'd hit these tables or you could crisscross them and kind of miss this table or you could put one over here and then maybe you could put one over here. Or you could somehow convince the bride and groom to move a little bit, just a little. Maybe this table comes here, this table goes there, then you have a straight shot. Go over the seating plan with the coordinator, the bride and groom, the planner, the onsite, whoever you need to and try to make sure you'r... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Don’t Set Lights To Strobe At A Wedding

February 1, 2018 by DJ Jay
DJ tips in under a minute, I just heard a story about a DJ who had some strobe lights going on around his booth and a parent came over and said, is there any way to kill the strobe lights? I have a child here who's epileptic and it could cause a seizure. And apparently, it's due to photosensitivity. And it's not the majority of kids who are epileptic, but according to the other DJ that told me the story, the DJ with the strobe lights instructed the parent to remove the child from the reception. My weddings, the bride and groom invite people they want. If I went up to a bride and groom and said, no more strobes, because someone could have a seizure, trust me, they'd go along with it. In fact, I tell my clients that I don't have strobing on my Revo-3 or on my atmospheric because of that reason. So if you want... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Make A Gear Wish List And See What You Need Versus Want.

January 25, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, what's your wish list? What gear would you have if you had to go out today and replace all of your gear with new gear? Would you go to vinyl, would you stick with CDs, would you stick with the same controllers, same speakers, same lights? What would you do? Try to get a wish list together and then establish what you need. Not so much what you want, but what you need, then determine if there's money in it. It's about ROI, Return on Investment. You want to buy light, get uplights, you can sell them. You want to buy a bunch of lasers. If you can't sell lasers to clients, I don't know, seems kind of goofy, but change up your setup, pretend you need to buy all new gear. You don't have to spend thousands; you can spend a few hundred, a hundred. I just bought an AC-3 controller ... [read more]
