DJ Tips In Under A Minute: A New Service For Taking Credit Cards.

May 3, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. I don't know about you, but with my business, about 99 percent of it I get payment in checks or sometimes even cash, but I was looking for something to take credit cards. I use PayPal, because I have a PayPal account and it's easy, you can invoice clients, everything works fine, but I saw this and decided I would at least open an account. So there you go, that's the little Square swiper. If you look, you can see it has that slice in it where the credit card goes. I haven't used it yet. I have an account, it's drawn to my bank. So when I do use it, it would be deposited directly. There's no fee. It is a 2.75 percent per swipe. So if you don't accept credit cards and you're looking for something to have at a gig in case the client says, you're awesome, let's extend an hour,... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: New Pioneer Rekordbox App.

April 26, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. If you are using a Pioneer CDJ player, you're using Rekordbox, hopefully, an MP3 program that allows you to put loops and cue points and get your waves put together and set up beat grids and everything else. Well, because of the ex-DJ Arrow using a Wi-Fi off of a mobile device, there it is, it is a free app in the app store. You can load tracks, you can prepare tracks, you can do whatever you want. You go in, you find a track, I have two loaded in here now, put in Shapeshifter's and boom, playing. Once it's fully loaded the track, I'll start to get the wave form built and have that run across so I can do all sorts of cool stuff. So if you're using CDJs, if you want to get the ex-DJ Arrow or if you just want a cool free app to mess around with on your phone with music, thi... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Use Your Email Signature To Your Advantage.

April 19, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. Do you use the signature on your emails? I didn't and I noticed a lot of DJs and a lot of professionals do. So I decided I would too. On mine, I simply have my name, that I'm the owner and DJ of my company, but then I decided to go in and add a few things. I have my YouTube channel, because I want brides and clients to go to my YouTube channel and see what I do, I have my email address, I have my phone number, I have my main web address, but then up here I have three lines, WeddingWire, Bridal Insider and the Knot. These are awards and/or things that I have done or had or bring light to my business in a positive way. So if you are not using the signature for your email, any awards you've gotten, any notoriety you've gotten put it on every single email, let the world know... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute Syncing Your Drives For Gigs.

April 12, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. This is what I use, a free program called Allway Sync and I believe it is allwaysync.com and this is what I use to match up my drives. Right now I am syncing up two drives. So I have all the information, the files that I've deleted from this drive to this drive. As you can see, it says, does not exist. And then down here I have what files are moving into where. So I have two drives that I use. One is a standard drive and the other one is my backup. And actually, you've seen the one with the wide cord, that's the white cord and then right here, that's the backup. So I just want everything to be the same. So what I'll do is sync it all up and then go through and clean. I'm sure I can set this to clean, I just haven't figured out yet. So if you're looking for a sync program... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Your Email Should Be A Business Address For Your Business.

April 5, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. This looks like another tip I did about your signature, but it's actually about email. I do use Gmail, but I have my address embedded in as J@JayDJ.com. It's actually in my sig so that when I email people, they see my website address. You can't email clients nowadays with a Hotmail, a Yahoo, even a Gmail account. You've got the best DJ at Gmail. It's just not saying enough. Clients want to be able to click on email addresses and then see a business address, .com, .net, dot-whatever. So if you can, go to your website and link an email address, whether it's DJ@your website address or your name, owner, whatever you want, but have it setup so that when clients get an email from you as a response or a first one, they see your email address as your business, in under a minute. ... DJ Tips In Under A Minute Always Ask If The Bride And Groom Can Be Used As A Referral.

March 29, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. [inaudible] and the bride, people leaving the wedding. I went up at the end of the night and said, how was everything? Awesome. Can I put you down as a reference and referral? And her immediate comment to me was, yes. So at the end of your night, go to your clients, bust your butt all night for them and then say to them, can I put you down as a reference and a referral? And when they say yes to you, which they will, then say, can I send you a WeddingWire review so you can keep your reviews up-to-date, because if you make your client's day, they will help you in the future. So again, at the end of the night, go to your clients and say, how was everything? It was great? Great. Can I put you down as a reference? When they say yes, make sure you send them a WeddingWire follow... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Check For New Firmware Updates For Your Gear.

March 22, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. If you have a controller and you use software, chances are you had to give them your email address and a password so that they can get in touch with you when they have new versions. Well, this is a page for a controller called the DDJ-ERGO. As you can see, it's got all this stuff, it's got a TSI file for mini-mapping, for a Traktor and it's got the driver right there. It also has updates. So Mac firmware updates, Windows firmware update. If you're using a controller, make sure you're checking for firmware updates. You may not get an email from the DJ company that supports your controller, but occasionally they find fixes for things and they release these things called firmwares. So what you'd end up doing is downloading this and loading it onto your controller. So check y... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: How People Should Use The Microphone.

March 15, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, microphone. At a gig right now and I will have two people later on toasting. And what I will do is I will -- as I say at every wedding, please hold the microphone here or here or here or here. Please don't hold the microphone down here like a pointer or over there showing people in the crowd. Do this at your weddings, do this at your events, go over to whoever's going to speak on your microphone and just simply say to them, let me give you a heads-up, it's this kind of microphone, it's already turned on, this one has the power button right there if you can see that at the base, doesn't have anything on the side. The other thing is please don't tap the microphone. Don't sit here, is this on? It is on, I gave it to you on, hold it about an inch and a half, two inches from y... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Finding Songs With Serato SSL/Itch.

March 8, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute, we're back in prepping for a wedding. So at a wedding this weekend, I'm setting up my music, I've got my crates, I've got my tracks, but a lot of times I like to burn tracks from within my crates onto a separate drive, like a flash drive so I know I have everything that's really important to the bride and groom. So what I would do in the past is simply open up my hard drive, then search the hard drive and that can take a while, because there's 20-some-odd thousand songs on the hard drive. But I learned a cool trick, the trick is this, you have your keyboard, so you hit control-R, watch what happens, boom, you get the location of the song. It actually comes up and shows you where it is. So now you can go into the song, right-click the track, copy it, drag it to something o... [read more]

DJ Tips In Under A Minute: Use A Movie Intro Song To Get Your Crowds Attention Before Speaking.

March 1, 2018 by DJ Jay
All right. DJ tips in under a minute. You're about to speak at a wedding, you're about to speak at an event, people are chit-chatting, it's cocktail hour, whatever the case might be. It's not always enough to get on the mike and start to speak, because people traditionally don't hear the first 10 seconds of what you say, it's just human nature. So I saw this in Las Vegas at a seminar and if I remember who gave the seminar, I will credit them. I think it was Peter Merry, though, but he said, how about starting off with a song that elicits that sort of response from people? And he mentioned this one. So next time you're doing a wedding or an event, try this, right before you have to speak on the mike, play the THX jet sound effect. People know it means something is happening, something's coming and they're liab... [read more]
