What is “Going the Extra Mile” and Why DJ companies need to do it!

So what is going the extra mile? Dictionary.com describes going the extra mile as “to make an extra effort” “do more than usual.

Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich” and “Laws of Success”, spent most of his life studying what makes people successful. By the way, if you haven’t done so already, make sure you pick up a copy of both books, they are must reads for all business owners/entrepreneurs!

Hill found that going the extra mile, putting in the extra effort more than anyone else and following a predictable and distinct pattern of behavior, you’ll achieve greater success and achievement over your competitor! In fact, you’ll achieve 95% greater success!

Are you going the extra mile? Yes? No? Well, let’s talk about it.

We all have one of those days where we just didn’t want to do anything but the bare minimum, just to get through our day or get a task completed.  Like making 20 calls instead of the 5 you made.  Stacking meetings back to back on Tuesday when you wound up scheduling 1 or 2 spaced out. What about the 2 emails you sent today instead of the 75 or 100 you promised yourself you would send.  Well, I got to tell you, I am guilty of all of those things.  But then I asked myself “How badly do I want success?”

I wanted BAD – really bad. So, I re-read Hills book (Chapter 3 of Think and Grow Rich).  Hill says going the extra mile, being more committed and being more disciplined,  puts you above 95% of all entrepreneurs. 

Actually, it’s 95% of the businesses don’t go the extra mile. 95% of the people are average. You know what average is? Average sucks. Average puts you with everybody else.  Eventually, remaining average will squeeze profits right from your pocket and disappear like a fart in the wind.

I have a friend of mine who runs his DJ business here in New York. He gives 150% to his customers and vendors all day, every day.  Here is what makes him so successful.

  1. He schedules appointments back to back.
  2. Makes 50 calls every day in the office.
  3. Sends out the email, (via his CRM system) to new prospects and repeat customers to let them know “I’m here to serve you” . Holidays, Special announcements, VALUE, VALUE, VALUE.

As a result his

  • Margins and profits are up year over year
  • Customer satisfaction and repeat business is at 95%
  • Product and services are indispensable

I am amazed at the way he goes the extra mile.  What’s his secret – there is none – it’s called doing the work – go the extra mile, do more than is expected – go above and beyond, all day, every day.

 

By the way, I know a friend of a friend who doesn’t go the extra mile.  I’m sure you can imagine where his business is going. At best his business is average. This doesn’t make him a bad person however he most likely won’t survive in this highly competitive market by being average.

So, here’s the message for today. Go the extra mile.   Imagine you are a car driving on the extra mile.  I can promise you it’s not  crowded  because you’re part of the 5% that actually do the work and go the extra mile. You’ll succeed quicker,  you’ll have better results, grow faster, increase profits and you’ll get to retain amazing customers and become indispensable to the market place.

So, I know this is a long one for today, but remember, go the extra mile, get the better results and be better than the 95% who are average.
