Visikord v2.0 – As Seen at MBLV17 and MBLV18

April 11, 2014 by Mobile Beat

Version 2.0 of the Visikord software was first demoed at MBLV18 as a beta, and now it is officially released. We believe existing and new users and their guests will have a blast with the new features! Visikord is a “Dance VFX Synthesizer” — software that puts dancers on the big screen where they make visual FX in the rhythm of the live DJ mix — and in v2.0 they can also play live dance minigames to that mix. Visikord runs on a PC with a Kinect eye for XBox (without the XBox) plugged in and placed by the screen.

The first major new feature is for the operator: a graphical control panel with large buttons easy to navigate during a busy night:

v1

The second feature is for the audience: two rhythm/dance minigames. “Starfall” is a casual game that has dancers catch stars and other celestial objects that pulse on the beat and do things when hit. “Beat Smash!” has targets arriving quickly on the beat and requires more skill and coordination, starting off easy and progressing to higher difficulty if the dancer plays well. Both games are seamlessly integrated in the party flow — they automatically start when someone enters the scene. The games use mic/line in to get the sound from the DJ’s mixer for real time (and state of the art) beat detection, or get the sound directly from the sound card if Visikord runs on the same computer as software that plays the music such as Virtual DJ.

v2

For the the DJ/VJ, the games are still primarily “visual FX synthesizers” — the DJ controls the effects and adds their own pictures and videos in the mix. For the dancers, these games offer something they cannot find on any console — more reactive, with themselves as stars, and most importantly played to live mixes of music they love!

We are grateful to our users from the Mobile Beat show and the ProMobile UK magazine for excellent feedback that lead to the new features.
