Now, don’t get me wrong: “I Loved Her First”, “My Little Girl” and “Butterfly Kisses” are AMAZING songs. 25 years from now, you’ll still hear them during a Father/Daughter dance. In fact, my last three weddings I performed at all featured these three songs.
And if you want to dance with your father to one of these three songs, please do so! 😉
This blog post was written for the brides that are looking for a Father/Bride dance song that isn’t one of those three.
In addition to the unique Father/Bride song ideas below, consider asking your father to surprise you with the song for your Father/Bride dance, or surprise him with the song. One of my brides, Aimee, surprised her dad with John Mellencamp’s “Cherry Bomb” for their Father/Bride dance because it was a song he sang to her as a little girl. The smiles they both wore were priceless!
So without any further ado, here are ten great alternative Father-Bride / Father-Daughter dance songs that you may choose that aren’t by Heartland, Tim McGraw, or Bob Carlisle.
Chuck Wicks – “Stealing Cinderella”
Personally, I think this is the PERFECT Father/Bride dance song. But that’s just my opinion.
Edwin McCain – “Walk With You”
Known for his First Dance hit, “I’ll Be”, Edwin sings this song from the perspective of a father walking his daughter down the aisle to give her away, and his memories and emotions as he makes that walk. Now, the only thing he needs to do is a Mother/Son dance song ;).
Trace Adkins – “You’re Gonna Miss This”
A song about slowing down and living in the moment, because “you’re gonna miss this, you’re gonna want this back”. No matter which song you choose for your Father/Daughter dance, make sure you enjoy every second of it, because one day, you will want it back.
Kenny Chesney – “There Goes My Life”
Recorded by one of my favorite artists, this is a song about a young man who finds out his girlfriend is pregnant – dashing his hopes and dreams of life on the west coast. But by the end of the song, we learn that his daughter, who is leaving for the west coast (brilliant writing!), is the most important thing in his life and he has to let her go chase her dreams.
Billy Joel – “Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)”
If your dad is a Billy Joel fan, this would be a fantastic selection (and it would probably surprise him that you knew of this Billy Joel song!). A great Father/Daughter dance lyric: “Wherever you may go, no matter where you are, I never will be far away.”
Phil Collins – “You’ll Be In My Heart”
This song is featured on the “Tarzan” soundtrack, and I think the lyrics pretty much explain why this is a great Father/Daughter dance song for those daughters that loved Disney movies! “Beauty & The Beast” would also be a fine Disney princess selection!
Fleetwood Mac – “Songbird”
Of course I had to find a Fleetwood Mac song for this list; and “Songbird” is just a beautiful song, period. Sung from the perspective of the parent, it is a song about wishes and hoping the child takes advantage of every opportunity that arises.
Van Morrison – “Tupelo Honey”
This song represents music at is absolute best. You can feel the soul, heart, love and passion as you listen to this song; no one will ever perform it better than Van Morrison. Period. Awesome Father/Daughter Dance lyric: “She’s as sweet as tupelo honey, she’s an angel of the first degree. She’s as sweet as tupelo honey, just like honey from the bee.”
Cat Power – “Sea of Love”
This is one of those Indie songs that is laid-back, short (just over two minutes), but most importantly, it’s very sweet.
Paul Simon – “Father and Daughter”
Similar to “Tupelo Honey” in terms of heart and soul, Paul Simon delivers an uptempo number about a father who claims there’ll never be another dad who loves his daughter more than he does.
BONUS: Frank Sinatra – “The Way You Look Tonight”
Finally, a timeless classic from Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra.
