A mobile controller for mobiles!? I haven’t tried it but it would seem to open up another dimension for us. Not being tied to my computer lets me mix music while mixing with the crowd. I think some will be impressed that they have just requested a tune from me and it pops up almost immediately. I will be interested in hearing other comments about this tool.
I’ve been using a Mac laptop as my sole source of music for the past three years, and I’ve learned A LOT about DJing in the 21st century as a result. When I started in this business, there were no “mobile DJs,” and I was a low cost alternative to bands in big Ohio clubs on their slower weeknights.
Low cost for them meant low return for me… lugging in Voice of the Theaters, Acoustic PA amps and the very first Peavey mixers, along with Panasonic turntables (they hadn’t become Technics yet!) And then there were the records…at one points, 4500 45s and six cases of 12″ singles made for a good 2 hour setup and tear down.
Fast forward to 2005, and now it’s a MacBook Pro, JBL Eons and away I go.
But the best thing EVER, for me, is DJ Intelligence added to a Mac based website.
When I advertise being an oldies specialist, interested clients-to-be can search my entire songbook and SEE that I walk the walk (or is it Stroll the Stroll?). You can tell a lot from the music a DJ carries, like whether it’s well chosen, or just a massive CD collection of thousands of songs NO ONE ever requests. AND, instead of waiting for checks to clear and the US Mail, the gateway link to Paypal makes collecting deposits instantaneous, guaranteed and less money than going to a bank for credit card clearing!
So let’s hear it for computers and technology…keeping us “Old Schoolers” at the top of our game, and bridging the communications gap of “word of mouth” with on line convenience and legitimacy.

To continue where the boss groover left off. I just recently switched over to a laptop. I was one of the old schoolers that said I would never go digital, but let me tell you it was trhe best decision I ever made. No more CD’s, I switched from break my back JBL SF25″s which are 2 15′s and a horn to Mackie SRM450v2′s and a laptop and set up and tear down is a breeze. If You havn’t gone this route yet from one old schooler to the rest of you, GIVE IT A TRY!
I have not been doing this as long as some of you, but I am also very happy to use my laptop instead of lugging and searching through a thousand CDs for a request. The only place we differ is on the sound and lighting equipment. With my small setup I use a pair of EV force dual 15″ cabinets. These give me excellent fullrange sound with go need for subs. They also have wheels on the bottom. My next step up is the EV Gladiator Setup. It consists of two 15″ tops stacked or pole mounted on two 18″ subs. To step up to the next level I turn a set of cerwin vega earthquake subs on their side and stack four of the dual 15″ EV forces in top of them. The first two setup are used every weekend for everything from weddings to sweet 16′s. The last huge setup is really only used at school dances. I always hear and see other DJ that are just using two self powered mackies. I am interested. Oh what I would give to not have to carry around heavy amp cases anymore. As you can see I never want to get somewhere and not have enough equipment. Do you guys with the small selfpowered setup ever have that problem?
