Is DJ Liability Insurance Worth the Cost?

If you’re in the DJ, photography, photo booth business, or in any wedding or event service business, chances are, you’ve considered getting liability insurance. You’ve probably researched the different insurance companies out there, and maybe even asked your own car insurance company about it. Let’s be honest, it’s expensive. However, how much money will you really lose, if you decide not to get liability insurance?

Whether you’re new to the business or a veteran, you’ve probably come across clients who have said that their venue requires a copy of your liability insurance policy. Sure, you can get back to the client and turn them down, saying you don’t have liability insurance, if you want to avoid spending the money. However, if you keep turning down events due to not having insurance, think of all the money you’re losing by not having insurance, versus spending the money to get it! You’ll easily make that back with the events you accept, that require insurance! You could also go on a website and buy the one day, one event policy, too. A one day policy can range from $100 – more than $400!  Taking that route is actually more expensive, since the cost really varies, depending on the type of event, the number of people, if alcohol will be served, etc.

To be honest, there’s not a clearly definitive answer on whether you should have liability insurance or not, but my advice is, get it! Yes, it can be expensive, especially for multi-system DJ companies, but in the long run, it’s better to have insurance and not need it, than to need insurance and not have it! If something happens on the way to an event, such as a car wreck, and your equipment gets damaged, how will you handle this without insurance? Do you have enough money to buy everything brand new, all over again? DJ equipment is not cheap, especially if you have to buy everything all at once!

We do carry liability insurance, simply because if we ever need it, we’ll have it. If we got into a wreck and had all of our equipment damaged, this would be costly to replace. Though there are other options, such as renting equipment, in the long run, we’ll get reimbursed for our equipment, which truly offers peace of mind! In my opinion, peace of mind is truly priceless… Get insurance!
