Just because you have insurance doesn’t mean you have insurance! This is something I tell all of my soon-to-be clients; insurance doesn’t mean insured. Think about it, when is the last time your insurance company asked about your setups or expansion in the last few years? If you have basic DJ insurance, but you’re setting up 300′ of truss, there’s a good chance that $300 a year plan isn’t really covering you. Sure, you’ll pass the COI request most venues ask for, but God forbid something happens, your insurance company will scream “we didn’t know you set this up!!”
For example, once we started hanging lighting over people’s heads, we had to upgrade our insurance. I’m not talking rigging, I literally mean a 30′ span of truss on crank stands that the crowd could walk under. Almost every DJ insurance said “nope, we don’t cover that under the base plan, you need _____ form of coverage.”
Is this something rare that happens in our industry No way!
Will you get caught with having the wrong insurance? Doubt it.
Will something go wrong even with smaller setup? Maybe.
Will you be pantsless when you get sued for everything if someone gets hurt? Yes.
Will you bounce back? Maybe
Will your reputation be the same again? Doubt it
Is saving a few dollars worth not having the right business in surance? NO WAY!
Why risk it? There is SO much wrong that can happen with what we do for living, and even if it’s not our fault, we can still be sued. All it takes is one simple (yet scary) call to the insurance company and ask “do you cover everything I do?”
This applies to everything DJs seems to offer: photobooths, pipe and drape, rentals, and so forth; are you 100% sure you are covered? If you have even the slightest doubt- check! It’s not a matter of IF, but WHEN you need to use it, you don’t want to lose your business over saving a few hundred a year.
