American DJs ProLight + Sound Booth To Feature Expanded Revo Series, Revolutionary Lamp Technology and . . A Creature of the Sea

March 10, 2010

LOS ANGELES - American DJ has a toolchest of lighting innovations in store for those who visit its display at ProLight + Sound trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany March 24-27. The company will show two new additions to its popular Revo Series of LED moonflowers, unveil a ground-breaking moving head with revolutionary Philips 5R lamp technology, and take the wraps off one of its most unusual special effects ever - a clear, see-through fixture named after its look-alike fish!

One of the stars of ADJ’s PLS lineup, the Jellyfish is a totally original LED effect with 84 RGBW lamps, housed in a unique-looking clear plastic case. Like its namesake fish, the Jellyfish radiates color through its transparent “outershell,” which makes it two effects in one: a bright red, green, blue and white beam projector; and a glowing case that changes colors. Unlike most fixtures that are best hidden away, the Jellyfish’s color-changing case actually becomes part of the light show! A DMX-compatible effect, theJellyfish can also be run in Sound Active and Master/Slave modes, featuring high-energy built-in programs, a color strobe and 0-100% electronic dimming. Weighing just 5 lbs., it’s great for mobile use. Plus, with no moving parts and 100,000-hour-rated LED lamps, it’s virtually maintenance-free. Drawing just 13W of power, it may also be the world’s first “green” jellyfish!

Another new ADJ light addresses the demand for smaller, more energy-efficient fixtures in a big way. The Vizi Spot 5R is a DMX moving head that blasts the output of a 575-watt unit, while being about ½ the size and using less than ½ the energy! What’s more, at just 27 lbs. it weighs about ½ as much as a typical 250-watt fixture, which also makes it much faster than most moving heads. How is this possible? The Vizi Spot 5R utilizes revolutionary new Philips 8000°K Platinum 5R discharge lamp technology, which in addition to delivering the above advantages, has an amazingly long discharge lamp life, rated at 2,000 hours. Despite its compact size, the Vizi Spot 5R is loaded with a full complement of professional features, including 7 dichroic colors, 8 rotating interchangeable gobos, 3-facet prism effect, gobo scrolling, gobo shake effect, 0-100% dimming and more.

ADJ will also be revealing the newest members of its top-selling Revo family of high-energy RGBW LED moonflowers - the Revo 4 and Revo Rave. Like their siblings, both are ideal for DJs and clubs, producing a roomful of eye-popping red, green, blue and white beams, while being portable and easy-to-use in either DMX, Sound Active or Master/Slave modes. The Revo 4’s 256 5mm RGBW LEDs create distinctive high-tech box-like patterns — matrixes, grids, squares and other geometric shapes. The Revo Rave is extremely compact with very wide beams, produced by 162 5 mm LEDs, which give it a lot of punch for its small size and make it great for entertainers on the go. Both units have a 100,000-hour lamp life and generate very little heat, so there’s no need for duty cycles. Plus, entertainers can pack up immediately after the show without waiting for a cool-down period.

These and other innovative products can be seen at American DJ’s PLS exhibit, located in Hall 11, Booth D51. “If there’s one theme running through our PLS show display, it’s that American DJ is continuing our commitment to bring the latest, most advanced lighting technologies to our core customer group - DJs, clubs and mobile entertainers. Whether it’s LEDs or the new Philips Platinum 5R discharge lamp, we are incorporating these cutting-edge technologies into fixtures that are compact, reliable, easy-to-use and fit within our customers’ budgets,” said Scott Davies, General Manager of the American DJ Group.

Mobile DJ Games: Perfect For Mitzvahs

March 5, 2010

For Mitzvahs, the games segment is (almost) a prerequisite. I begin with “passive” walk-arounds during cocktail hour. Laminating these 3 will make them permanent repertoire additions.

1. Large rebus puzzles. (Book stores have them.)

Both of these use 8″ x11″ paper:

2. Make a large triangle. Centering, print on 3 lines as follows:
Spread
some butter on the
the BIG sandwich.
As each kid reads it quickly, invariably most say “Spread some butter on the BIG sandwich.” But it doesn’t. It says “Spread some butter on the the BIG sandwich.” Adults get stumped, too!

3. Using a large, thick font, print one color on each line: RED ORANGE YELLOW BLUE GREEN PURPLE BLACK. But color them differently. Ask the kids to quickly tell you the colors. They’ll start by saying “red.” Wrong! It’s blue, etc.

Hand out numbered raffle tickets for every win. At the end, ask the Mitzvah kid his favorite number, then “OK, Josh’s favorite number is 2. If the last number on your ticket is a 2, you’re a winner!” 10% win. It’s fair, luck of the draw and no one complains.

When it comes time for the actual games segment, there’s life beyond “Coke & Pepsi” and “The Limbo.” There are contests which are SO much more creative. With new, interactive games, make your parties STAND OUT from your competitor’s.

YOUR PARTIES ARE ABOUT TO BECOME A WHOLE LOT MORE FUN! Check out MobileDJGames.com and mouse browse over 100 games and DJ “toys.” (800)296-2596

Foreigner rocks with beyerdynamic wireless on tour

February 25, 2010

Foreigner rocks with beyerdynamic wireless on tour
Opus 900 Series wireless powers Kelly Hansen’s lead vocals for iconic rock band.

As one of the most popular rock acts in the world, Foreigner is constantly touring or playing major events, and singer Kelly Hansen relies on beyerdynamic Opus Series wireless microphones night after night.

“In the 20-plus years I’ve used Beyer mics, I’ve always been impressed with the sonic quality,” states Hansen. “These mics sound like studio mics onstage. I don’t want hyped midrange or narrowed spectrum to assist in feedback rejection, I want to hear what I’m putting out, and Beyer does that in a big, warm way. I sing a demanding range of music, and I’m very particular about what I need to hear, so I choose Beyer, every time.”

“We carry two systems right now, based on the new Opus 900 wireless with the EM981S condenser capsule,” says monitor engineer Lorenzo Banda, who has been with the band three years. “Bar none, it’s one of the best-sounding capsules I’ve ever heard. It just sounds so warm, especially in Kelly’s lower register. I can’t get him to use anything else. Nor would I want to. So no matter where we go in the world, these two units come with us.”

Having used it in full-scale touring, Banda is quite pleased with the Opus Series wireless. “It’s got all the features I could want as an engineer,” explains Lorenzo. “Scan and sync is really easy with the ACT button, and it’s fast and easy to change groups and frequencies if you need to. But for me, it all starts with the sound. The Beyer wireless just sounds so much better for this kind of music. I just wouldn’t use anything else.”

In addition to Hansen’s wireless, Lorenzo also carries a beyerdynamic TGX-60 handheld mic for hardwired vocals. “A lot of times, we’re doing interviews and maybe a quick acoustic set for local TV or radio. For those situations, wireless isn’t needed or practical, and the TGX-60 still gives us that Beyer sound, with a really rich low end and smoothness across the full bandwidth.”

Other beyerdynamic mics on stage include an Opus 89 dynamic for bassist Jeff Pilson’s backing vocals. And to add crowd noise into the group’s in-ear mixes, a pair of MCE 86 shotgun microphones is aimed from the stage into the crowd from behind the side speaker stacks and shooting toward the center of the house.

Lorenzo Banda also has high praise for the flexibility of the Opus 900. “It’s just got a fantastic receiver. Whether it’s a theater tour or a major television event, you would never know the difference in terms of RF performance. We do things like NASCAR races and NFL playoff halftime shows on live TV, and you know the wireless environment in those places is insane. But my Beyer gear is so solid, it never takes a hit. What more can I say?”

The Opus 900 is beyerdynamic’s pro touring wireless line, replacing the Opus 500, which operates in the 700 MHz frequency band, will become illegal to operate in the U.S. as of June 12, due to the FCC’s reallocation of spectrum. Foreigner and Banda, however, won’t give theirs up. “Foreigner is a global band and Kelly still loves his Opus 500,” he notes, “so we’ll be keeping it to use in countries where 700 MHz is still legal. But we now use the dual-channel Opus 900 as our primary touring system in the U.S.”

Banda also took time out to praise beyerdynamic for its factory support. “I can’t say enough positive things about this company,” he says. “especially now during the wireless transition. Their support has been as strong as we could ask for, both in the U.S. and Europe. We couldn’t be more pleased.”

Foreigner toured extensively last fall, in support of the groups recent Can’t Slow Down album release, the band’s first studio release with Hansen on vocals. The group has just begun an intensive 2010 tour schedule, starting with two months of North American dates followed by some April dates in Europe.
