5 Myths of School Dance Marketing by Arnoldo Offermann

May 12, 2014 by Aaron Burger
Ok, so perhaps I should’ve submitted this for Mobile Beat’s September edition, butmb152_056 unfortunately, the idea hadn't occurred to me yet when the deadline for that issue rolled around. However, after recent conversations, I've developed a strong feeling that I address the five biggest myths about school dance marketing. For those of you who don’t know me, I do a bit of school marketing here and there (ha ha) and thought I’d share these five points. So, without adding any filler sentences to make this paragraph look like a real paragraph and not just two lines of text (irony), let’s get started! 1) IT’S TOO LATE TO MARKET H... [read more]

January 1, 2014 by Mobile Beat Staff Writer
DAVID MORICCA ON MIXIFY'S INNOVATIVE, ONLINE DJ BROADCASTING AND INTERACTION PORTAL Mobile Beat: We found out about a new service that DJs can use to spread the word about their mixes, about their style and a lot of other info. We're here with David Moricca, the founder and CEO of Mixify. David, tell us a little about your background and where Mixify came from. David Moricca: Sure. So our company has actually been in existence for a little over a year, but we really kind of got to Mixify through the buildout of an initial platform called Breakout Band. Breakout Band, which we launched in 2011, is an online music production platform primarily targeting younger kids, which enabled them to make their own beats online and record their own vocals. What we found in building out that platform was that the audien... [read more]

A Rat Pack Record – By Mike Ficher

December 17, 2013 by Mike Ficher
A BRIEF CHRONICLE OF VEGAS COOL Women? Broads. The whole world? A giant smoking section. The booze? Flowing freely. Las Vegas was a curious desert oasis of a shade more than 64,000 residents permanently, a few million visitors annually. Proximate atomic tests occurred monthly, while the Cold War was hot news. Simmering discontent over the conformist mindset of the Eisenhower years was seeping into public consciousness. Racism was still in significant public flower throughout many parts of the United States. Welcome to 1960—and the second generation of the Rat Pack was about to provide a new vision for the cultural zeitgeist of America. Second generation? "Let’s start the action!" - Frank Sinatra The legendary quintet of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey ... [read more]

Legal Money Matters – By Rob Schenk

December 17, 2013 by Mobile Beat Staff Writer
THE TRUTH ABOUT NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSITS Most people in the wedding business know you have to protect your time and resources.  For vendors, damages from a cancellation can range from losses on food that spoils, to alteration costs on gowns, to lost opportunities for booking another wedding.  It can be particularly difficult for many vendors to prove monetary loss for missed opportunity because a certain weekend was popular or you didn’t have time to hire adequate help. A non-refundable deposit is one of the best tools to ensure you’re compensated by a fickle bride. But, are non-refundable deposits legal? Yes and no. Let’s back up first. Let’s talk about lawsuits and the general purpose of lawsuits: collecting damages (i.e., money, i.e., dolla dolla bills, i.e., the mean green). DAMAGES... [read more]

To Dream the Impossible Dream By Stu Chisholm

November 15, 2013 by Stu Chisholm
Back in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s, I had a rush of outdoor events. I had contracts with two different county Parks & Rec departments for a series of shows, plus I had contracted a huge, high-profile charity event: the March of Dimes Superwalk in Hart Plaza, Detroit. Except for the latter, these shows were usually very short (less than 3 hours) and stripped-down (no lighting/extras). In some cases, the travel, set- up and strike time took longer than the show itself! In the case of the Superwalk, it was always on a Sunday morning, right after a late-night wedding reception, which meant I started that show already exhausted. "How nice would it be," I thought, "if I had a portable DJ booth all set up and ready to go, where I could just pull up, plug it in, play the party and then leave..." TEMPTATIO... [read more]
