DJ School Daze

September 7, 2016 by Rob Ferre
T he new school year is quickly arriving and that means you have many opportunities to take advantage of events that come your way. For high schools, it’s a shoe-in for homecoming or tailgate parties, but are you looking to do even more school events? I suggest looking into elementary schools. I have often advised DJs to start marketing and looking to PTAs, PTOs, or principals of schools to see what events they are hosting.173-10-11 Here are a few of the different types of events schools are ramping up for in the fall: Fall Carnivals. Sometimes these events go by different names—back-to-school night, fall carnival, family night— but they are all the same... [read more]

Booking your next Halloween Event

October 3, 2015 by Rob Ferre

It's October and that means it’s time for Halloween!

How are you filling your calendar this October?  Believe it or not, October is one of my busier months. I schedule a variety of events for schools from dances to assemblies. This year is one of the best calendar Octobers I have seen. With Halloween on Saturday, there is an entire week of events to lead up to the big day.

You may be wondering what on earth you, as a DJ, can do during the week leading up to Saturday October 31st.  I'll share with you several kinds of events and activities you can do to lead up to Halloween, including 5 of my favorite "go-to" Halloween songs.

Let’s be real: parents are taking pictures of their kids doing the limbo, participating in games, and their dance moves. How often are the parents taking pictures of DJ Rob? I would say parents are entertained when they see their child being entertained. Let's go over three ways we can create kid stars at our events. Contests and Games: I love doing a variety of games that highli... [read more]

The Theme is the Name of the Game

July 23, 2015 by Rob Ferre
Last time we talked about how to fill your summer calendar with weekday work from events at malls to pool parties. Now that you have booked the event, you need to give them a show. I often like to suggest some ideas to the event planners and coordinators so they know they aren't just hiring me, but my expertise as an event professional. Collaboration between you and your planners sets you up for success and ends with people lining up to grab your business card at the end of the event. A recent event I just did at an outlet mall was very successful due to the marketing by the mall but I also believe due to the great theme. The theme for the event was Super Heroes. They hired me along with Spider-Man and Captain America. I am pretty sure all the kids were there to see their favorite super hero and not DJ Rob... [read more]

Making Kids Events Your Next Summer Event

July 2, 2015 by Rob Ferre
It’s summer and you are thinking, “It’s wedding season!” But guess what? It’s also, “Kid’s are out of school!” season. Ever wondered how you can you make an extra buck on the weekdays? I have a couple of tips to share to help you maximize your summer cash flow. I fill my weeks with not just weddings but also events that cater to kids and families. Here are a couple of directions you could go in looking for your next summer gig. Malls and Shopping Centers: Often times malls have events throughout the year, but even more so during the summer. They may have ongoing monthly events. I do events for 3 separate malls in the area. One mall does a monthly Kids Club event, one does Kids Club just for the summer, and one does family fun nights every Monday in July. Create relationships with event c... [read more]
