5 DJ Hacks on Monday to Make your Saturday Epic

May 9, 2017 by Randy Lehrman
You hear all the sports gurus talk about playing "Monday Morning Quarterback" after the big Sunday game.  In DJ land we work our hardest, all weekend, to keep 100's of guests partying til all hours, at all costs.  Sometimes we get set in our ways and don't add to our knowledge base...so I'm here to share 5 awesome hacks to take your DJ game to the next level before your next event.
  1. 1. Shazam during the week...EVERYTHING YOU LIKE!  If you're like me, sometimes your background music can get boring; dance music gets stale...best thing to do to add some flavor is Shazam everything you hear that's new and fresh and then open your DJ computer at home and use "Content Unlimited" on Virtual DJ or "Pulselocker" in Serato to download all those new favorites all at once and make some new playlists.  No... How Much Should I Charge For A Deposit??? Part 2

April 20, 2017 by Randy Lehrman
Earlier this week, Jason Rubio wrote an article called "How Much Should I Charge For A Deposit?" http://www.mobilebeat.com/how-much-should-you-charge-for-a-deposit/ I'm the first guy to say everyone is open to their opinion and more importantly, every market is different.  Certainly Jason's Austin market is different than my LA market.  What I think happens to be universal is that DJs should advertise to our clientele, every moment they can, how valuable we are to having the perfect event. Jason seems to suggests that having a $100 non-refundable deposit on a $2000 event is "fine."  Even if they cancel a few, that's fine too. (His words.) I highly disagree, as do more than one person I've spoken with on this subject... [read more]

Virtual DJ Streams Ahead…

April 13, 2017 by Randy Lehrman
Tons of DJs out there would say Serato is their go-to for all things Club-DJ and lots of Mitzvahs and Weddings.  This is the name!  But recently Virtual DJ has forged ahead with a few new features --last June and just this week something brand new. In June, I wrote about Virtual DJ's new software which integrated a new feature called ASK THE DJ which gave each paid member it's own Virtual DJ website which allowed guests at that specific event the ability to send requests directly to a playlist on Virtual allowing that DJ to identify the person (for shoutouts) and pull the song from a play list and BOOM! Requested and played, giving the DJ to keep track of audience requests real-time without leaving the board. Aside from the Virtual also has Content Unlimited which is their music streaming service whi... [read more]

In a Fog About Which Haze Machine To Buy???

March 23, 2017 by Randy Lehrman
Remember way back when (and sometimes now) all we saw were the $39 fogger specials?  Halloween, carnivals, and Bar-Mitzvahs...That was the only effect we had to enhance our lighting.  The giant fog cloud that enveloped our room also made old people cranky, asthmatics cough to death, and photographers mad with boggy photos.  Then the movie studios created haze machines to alleviate the smoke and create something of an atmosphere changer...and now we have these in our business to enhance all of our amazing lighting and create a whole "Club Vibe" wherever we go. As I use a ton of lighting on my events, I decided to test a few haze machines and then run a finalists test with the two top haze machines that are both $400 and below.  The final battle is between the Chauvet Hurricane Haze 4 and the American ... Jedi Mind Tricks for DJs

March 19, 2017 by Randy Lehrman
Whether you're DJing at a Wedding or a Bar-Mitzvah, most of us in Mobile DJ land should take a partial role in the event planning on the entertainment side.  Being prepared is key, but offering your client tons of suggestions about music before the event can give you a big advantage to make the party the best it can be...Here are some quick ideas of how to drive your party to being a 10!
  1. 1. Meet with your clients in person for the final planning meeting!  I usually meet all of my clients 2-3 weeks before the event, IN PERSON, to plan the event.  Music and entertainment are what drives the party, so how on earth will you ever get to know your clients without visiting them at their home?!  Get to know them, their likes and dislikes, and create a relationship and not just a vendor contract.

Don’t Yelp yourself in the foot!

February 11, 2017 by Randy Lehrman
With so many social media sites, and with so many sites dedicated to reviews in general, like Yelp, you can never be sure where your reviews are coming from.  In the last 5 years we've seen a huge uptick in sites dedicated to reviews for weddings and parties as well.  With WeddingWire & Yelp topping my list of where my reviews come from I wanted share a quick thought on negative reviews. Sadly for DJ companies and businesses alike, anyone can come along and "try" to ruin your reputation online.  There have even been other DJs who create fake accounts to write bad reviews on other DJ's Yelps.  What is this world coming to???  In any event, whether you have a real or fake review written about you, there are a few things you can do to A. Minimize damage B. Come out looking like the good guy. Lucki... [read more]

Sunlight: Party Killer or Money Maker

January 17, 2017 by Randy Lehrman
Ever dreaded the idea of a day party???  People draggin' at that 12 noon Bar-Mitzvah; 1000 windows in the room, streaming in sunlight, and you're working your butt off to get people up...Why?  Sunlight. Proven by science, people are less likely to dance or lose their inhibitions in the daytime, sometimes turning a party into a luncheon. Mobile DJs want to CREATE A PARTY!  Not have a bunch of people staring out a window at the duck filled pond.  I've figured out the solution...and you can make money off of it. If your clients DO pick a daytime venue with windows (especially for a Bar/Bat-Mitzvah) and they want a dance party but LOVE their outside view, you can do a few things do make everyone happy and your wallet a little thicker. #1. Black out the windows.  Lose the sunlight in the room.  I... [read more]

Wedding Horror Stories: Get Personal

August 31, 2016 by Randy Lehrman
Just when you thought it was safe to DJ a wedding...You hear about the horror stories, the crazy Youtube moments, and of course..."He said WHAT???!!!!!!" Now, we'll get to the 'He said, she said' in a moment.  First, I wanted to address how adding a little bit of extra detective work can avoid problems down the road. You've probably asked a million questions of brides and grooms; mostly you've asked about music, timing, food, bouquet, etc.  But have you ever asked a wedding couple if everyone gets along???  Have you ever asked about who is toasting as opposed to just the names???  It might help to alleviate crazy things happening at an event if you get a little bit personal and get to know a couple and their wedding party more than just who is coming u... Make your next Grad Party a breeze….

June 30, 2016 by Randy Lehrman
After the craziest May & June in my company's history, I can now take a breath as July simmers down a bit. This was the first time I had seen Bar-Mitzvah season, Wedding season, School Dance-Mania, and Grad Season all crash together, making us not only busy on the typical Saturdays & Sundays, but all the weekdays too... All I preached to my crew this year is that: Grad Parties are a completely different animal than School Dances. Ever think about that?? Sometimes a school dance can be as tough as it gets. You're given your 3-4 hour time slot and you have to get kids dancing the whole time without a break. Just straight music. These are kids who maybe pay $5-$10 to come to a dance, but maybe it's just to socialize; maybe it's to Snapchat the party or maybe, if you're lucky, they came to dance. ... [read more]

Virtual Song Requests: A Dream Come True

June 13, 2016 by Randy Lehrman
From aspiring DJs, with little to no experience to a seasoned vet, like myself, one thing a DJ has to deal with on a nightly basis is song requests.  Whether you laugh off the horrible ones, play the ones that you missed when you met with a client, or get pushed over by a massive crowd of 13 year-olds at a Bar-Mitzvah asking for a song that has barely dropped on radio--we all deal with requests.  (see Drake) While I'll rarely post on new software or updates to existing DJ tools, this plug in had me thinking and excited. Virtual DJ, which usually by name, is considered farther down on the list than #1 Serato, has come out with it's 8.2 version.  Sure, there's a few updates to reliability, a custom pad for creating specific tools directly on your deck, and a couple of other goodies; the one featur...
