Good Times Never Seemed So Good

June 12, 2017 by Mike Ficher
You are playing at a wedding reception. The moment is right. You hit play. Neil Diamond blasts from the powered speakers. The crowd quivers in anticipation and many start singing along. All voices join in, shout-singing the first line of the chorus. The moment arrives. You kill the volume, then—“Bah! Bah! Bah!” Good times certainly never seemed as good as this moment, for this joyous crowd. The next Saturday: The moment is right. You hit play... “Sweet Caroline” is one of the most enduring and popular songs of all time. A #4 pop and #3 adult contemporary hit in June 1969—then Diamond’s first top ten hit since 1966—the track has appeared ... [read more]

Milestones Looking Back – To Look To The Future

July 3, 2016 by Mike Ficher
Milestones: They provide convenient launching points to reflect on where we have been and to peavey-fischerproject where we might be going. For Mobile Beat, three milestones, serendipitously coinciding with this issue, offer a rich opportunity to tender observations and thoughts in both directions. This issue marks the 25th anniversary of Mobile Beat #1, an ambitious, well-intentioned start-up that emerged as a critical fulcrum in the burgeoning mobile DJ business. The fact that the publication is still going strong a quarter of a century later is a testament to its timing, evolution and responsiveness to the needs of its market. GREAT SCOTT! How fa... Perceptions

January 19, 2016 by Mike Ficher
perception-illusionOur son moved into the dorms at the University of Oregon in late September to begin his freshman year. Go Ducks! In addition to the raging current of emotions in my heart and the non-stop slide show of images and memories racing through my mind, I thought a little fatherly wisdom might be appropriate. Along with the usual slogan-ready admonitions of study hard, have fun, stay focused, smile, laugh, spend smartly and embrace and be in every moment, I concluded that pragmatic advice about the world might also be beneficial. After all, I have a few years and many more experiences on the kid! Right? What could I ... [read more]

A Rat Pack Record – By Mike Ficher

December 17, 2013 by Mike Ficher
A BRIEF CHRONICLE OF VEGAS COOL Women? Broads. The whole world? A giant smoking section. The booze? Flowing freely. Las Vegas was a curious desert oasis of a shade more than 64,000 residents permanently, a few million visitors annually. Proximate atomic tests occurred monthly, while the Cold War was hot news. Simmering discontent over the conformist mindset of the Eisenhower years was seeping into public consciousness. Racism was still in significant public flower throughout many parts of the United States. Welcome to 1960—and the second generation of the Rat Pack was about to provide a new vision for the cultural zeitgeist of America. Second generation? "Let’s start the action!" - Frank Sinatra The legendary quintet of Frank Sinatra, Dea... [read more]

Extended Remix By: Mike Ficher

November 12, 2013 by Mike Ficher
Remixes, popular in the club and mobile DJ trade, might be thought of as a new way of looking at an old or current thing. Songs are remixed for a variety of reasons: • To adapt or revive it for radio or nightclub play • To alter a song for artistic purposes or to alter a song to suit a specific music genre or radio format • To use some of the same materials, allowing the song to reach a different audience •To alter a song for artistic purposes • To provide additional versions of a song for use as bonus tracks from the early efforts of remix pioneers Tom Moulton, Larry Levan, and Shep Pettibone, to the prolific contemporary reimaginings of a growing cadre of gifted, talented and creative spin doctors, remixes provide dancers with exciting new beats grafted into familiar tracks; remixes... September 15, 2012 by Mike Ficher
No, not your residence, of course. When you are serving at an event, where do you live?Issue 144-044 Do you live only in the world available—the banquet room, the hotel, the museum, the park—or do you live in the world that you and the client would like to create for the event and for the guests? Editor’s note: In the wake of the sad passing of the legendary Dick Clark, we first offer this already-scheduled reflection on the show he built into a powerful, music-industry-influencing entity. Next issue, we will include more on the life and legacy of this consummate master of ceremonies, and how he impacted many in the mobile DJ world.143-076 John Oates could barely wait for the bell to ring, signaling the end of his final class of the school day. A Defining Moment BY MIKE FICHER

May 7, 2012 by Mike Ficher
According to the Free Dictionary, an entertainer is one “to hold the attention of with something amusing or diverting.” Yes, that definition explains why Kim Kardashian, Nadya Suleman and just about any so-called reality star or tabloid tease may be considered an entertainer! Questionable talent and dubious pop culture judgment aside, the definition of an entertainer offers an opportunity to more critically assess who you are in the entertainment spectrum: Do you powerfully hold the attention of an audience? Or do you simply divert them from their other concerns? IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND... While neither definition presents a platinum standard for entertainers, the former suggests a more positive goal for an entertainer than the latter. “To hold the attention of” infers a rapt audience, one t... A LOOK AT THE BROADER POWER OF MUSIC TO BRING CHANGE Peter Yarrow, Mary Travers and Noel Paul Stookey sang about "the hammer of justice," "the bell of freedom" and "the song about love between my brothers and my sisters, all over this land," many times, as their version of Pete Seeger and Lee Hayes" 141-389"If I Had a Hammer" rose to number ten on the Billboard national pop singles chart. But, one particular performance, on one particular day was different.
