The Thing about Forums

May 27, 2017 by Michael Cordeiro
Summer is almost here and wedding season is in full swing for most of the country. The majority of us have jam packed calendars between events and meetings. When DJ's get busy, forums get even busier. I belong to several forums (public and private) that cover all sorts of DJ related topics. For the most part, these forums provide a wealth of good info and tips. Unfortunately, some of us forget that the main purpose of forums is to share ideas and help each other get better at our craft. After a spending any amount of time reading posts, strands and threads on various forums a few main personality types quickly emerge over and over. Some a... [read more]

The Profile Page – It’s Back!

May 22, 2017 by Michael Cordeiro
Mobile Beat is always thinking of new ways to bring you better content. We strive to be on the cutting edge of what is new, important and relevant to our industry. We cover the big topics of gear, music, performance and people. The first three topics are very well represented in Mobile Beat, but we felt that the "people" section needed some attention. So, resurrecting the Profile page to spotlight those impacting the DJ world in a positive and unique way was an easy decision. Each month Mobile Beat is going to interview a DJ, entertainer or artist that stands out in our industry. We need YOUR input. It's a big world. Tell us who you would li... [read more]

Comedian Don Grey On The Funnier Side of Performing Better

May 10, 2017 by Michael Cordeiro
We all know that engaging our audience is a crucial part of having a successful event. The ability to properly use humor is just as much a learned skill as any other in our bag of tricks. But the fact is that some of us are just not as funny as we think we are. There is hope though. I sat down with comedian Don Grey recently to get his thoughts on how to effectively use comedy to make our performances better. It's no joke: According to Don, comedy is serious business. MikeC: Hey Don, I appreciate you taking time out on the ship to sit with me. How long have you been doing comedy for Carnival? DonG: My pleasur... [read more]

Book of the Month: Unshakeable By Tony Robbins

April 28, 2017 by Michael Cordeiro
If "macro" and "micro economics" and "fiduciary" sound like items on an Indian take out menu to you, don't feel bad. Understanding the world of finance, the stock market, and planning for retirement is mind boggling. My eyes just glaze over any time someone starts "speaking" math. The hard truth is that in today's world of an uncertain economy and individual retirement plans, one has to be very savvy and knowledgeable to get ahead of the game and have financial security. Super lifestyle guru Tony Robbins' new book Unshakeable decodes the financial gibberish and double-talk of Wall Street into a navigable plan of action fo... [read more]

Eagles Only, No Pigeons – Get Disrupted!

April 13, 2017 by Michael Cordeiro
We may not always realize it, but personal and professional development go hand in hand. We can only do our best when we are at our best. Many of us tend to put more emphasis on our professional skills than developing our life skills. We practice our microphone techniques, improve transitions, build better playlists and hone our mixing skills. Our spiritual, mental and physical well being takes work as well. How much time do you actually spend developing the best YOU? At MBLV21 this year attendees were blessed with many great seminars and speakers. One of the best was by our host - Todd Mitchem at the end of the conference. Todd's seminar foc... [read more]

Chumlee Talks Music, Candy and Sneakers with Mobile Beat

April 5, 2017 by Michael Cordeiro
Undeniably one of the most popular reality TV shows of the last decade is Pawn Stars on the History channel. The show follows the dealings of three generations of the Harrison family and one lovable sidekick at their family owned Gold & Silver Pawn shop in old Las Vegas. The affable sidekick known affectionately as "Chumlee" also has a secret passion. He loves to DJ. I had the opportunity to catch up with him at MBLV21 this past March. MikeC: Thank you for coming by the convention today. I wanted to start out with a few questions about the show Pawn Stars. The show has been on air for almost 8 years... [read more]

Putting Sauce on those MBLV21 Nuggets

March 21, 2017 by Michael Cordeiro
It's hard to believe another amazing week of Mobile Beat Madness has come to an end. A week crammed with learning, celebrating, making new friends and more celebrating. Definitely a lot of celebrating. The big question is how many "nuggets" did you take home with you and are you ready to apply them? The big focus this year at MBLV21 was on motivation and sales, or "The business of running a DJ business". Both are key topics in our industry. The principles, methods and ideas discussed this year will have a major impact on your business and personal life if you apply them. Wasted knowledge is simply a waste. The motivational speeches, ... Ten People I Want To Get Stuck in an Elevator with at MBLV21

March 5, 2017 by Michael Cordeiro
Only a week left until the start of what is to be the biggest and best Mobile Beat conference ever: MBLV21. Fellow DJ's from all over the continent are finalizing their travel plans and convention itineraries. Dutifully looking over the seminar and trade show floor schedules. Ready to collect as many nuggets as they can in four short days. Like Easter eggs in a video game, nuggets can be gathered in so many places in and out of the presentation rooms. Meal periods and coffee breaks are the perfect time to scoop up a few extra tips. The trick is knowing with whom you would like to speak and finding the right time to ask them questions to help y... Alice Cooper Talks Vampires Villains and Golf

February 16, 2017 by Michael Cordeiro
[caption id="attachment_103172" align="alignleft" width="300"] Vampires, Villains and Golf[/caption]   The history of Rock and Roll is laden with heroes, guitar gods and bands that have achieved an almost mythical status in our minds. Rock and Roll also has its villains. The anti hero. Those musicians who chose to go against the grain and build their popularity and stardom on being infamous. A few names instantly pop into mind like Johnny Rotten, Iggy Pop and Ozzy. Johnny cash was certainly one of the first true Rock and Roll rebels; but the grand daddy of them all surely has to be Alice Cooper.     Hard Rock was at its peak du... [read more]
