The 2012 Mobile Beat DJ Show and Conference is excited to announce an exclusive showing of the award-winning documentary “The Wrecking Crew”. This film is the story of the Los Angeles session musicians in the 1960s who helped create so much of the classic music of that period, many titles that continue to be part of today’s mobile DJ repertoire.

The Wrecking Crew played on hits for the Beach Boys, Elvis, The Byrds, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Sonny and Cher, Jan & Dean, The Monkees, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, The Mamas and The Papas, Tijuana Brass, Ricky Nelson, Johnny Rivers and were Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound. The amount of work that they were involved in was tremendous.

They were also involved in groups that were “The Milli Vanilli’s” of the day. A producer would get the guys in and lay down some instrumental tracks. If it became a hit, they would record an album and put a group together to go on the road. This happened many times with groups like the Marketts, Routers, and T-Bones. The next day they would do the same thing and call it another name. Same musicians, but different group name.

Renowned musicians who have seen the documentary have raved. “’The Wrecking Crew’ is the best documentary yet about the recording scene,” said Steve Miller. “I loved it.” Elvis Costello said it’s “a wonderful, touching and… hilarious film about the unsung stars of so many records that you carry in your heart.”

The American Federation of Musicians says the film may one of the largest soundtracks of any film in history, and as a result, the cost of licensing the music for the film is estimated at more than $300,000. According to Producer and director Denny Tedesco, “The cost of licensing the music is the only reason the film has not been released, but quitting was never an option. So the next mission was to raise the final funds to help pay for the licensing.” Tedesco came up with a unique solution: make “The Wrecking Crew” a non-profit, raising funds through private showings.

All MB show attendees are welcome to watch the film of this legendary group of musicians, forever known as “The Wrecking Crew” on Wednesday night, February 8, at 7PM.

The music of the 60′s generation included R&B,motown, rock, instrumentals, surfing music, songs of protest, even hilarious and crazy songs. Come celebrate them all at this year’s MBLV annual Welcoming Night Party, again hosted by Johnny Rozz and sponsored by Hercules.

Come dressed in your definition of the period and be eligible to win great prizes, or just come as you are. Meet us in Riveria Royale Pavillion with Emcee John Rozz and DJs Steve Sharp and DJ Flip on Monday night,February 6,2012. Doors Open 6:30 P.M.

An exciting lineup of seminars is planned for the 2012 Mobile Beat DJ Show and Conference (MBLV16) coming to the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas for the fifth year in a row in February.

On Monday, February 6, the “Unofficial Day-Before-The-Show” seminars present SIX exciting sessions. What started as a few extra options for those arriving early has turned into a packed day of information kicking off at Noon.

Among the day’s presentations is Ron Ruth with an all-new Part 2 of “Disney’s 3 Keys to Success,” where we’ll take another peek behind the Disney curtain and explore…Clientology, Storytelling and Pixie Dust. These 3 processes not only support the essential service elements, but are key to your ability to deliver unexpected magic, enjoy unprecedented levels of client satisfaction and to solidifying YOUR reputation as the standard bearer of excellence in the wedding DJ industry.

David Hascom’s “Compound Your Success,” will look at all the keys to true success as applicable to all industries or individuals and help you learn what those things are and how to Compound Your Success.

The Boogie Hill Faders are known for their unique and club focused brand of music production works. They’ve combined the best studio practices in studio remixing and creating live mashups to create a new hybrid production style, they call, “The Reup”, a fusion of popular remixing production and creative mashup techniques. Don’t miss their “Tips & Tricks to produce your own DJ remixes & mashups”

Tom Haibeck

has a new book and seminar to go with it: “The Power of Publicity!”Have you ever wondered how business people get themselves profiled in newspapers, magazines and on radio and television programs? It’s a great way to generate free advertising about yourself as a mobile entertainer — and PR expert Tom will show you how to make it happen.

If you are seen as “just another DJ,” you will have trouble making yourself seem attractive to many potential customers. You may be amazing at what you do, but that only helps if you can get enough customers to showcase your skill and efficiency. Decide what makes you different from everyone else and use that to create your marketing concept. Alan Dodson has tips to do that in Taking Your DJ Business To The Top.

In Rob Peters’ Kid’s Entertainment For DJs – Revisited, take a close look at children’s entertainment as a profitable venture for DJs. In some cases, it does not require any additional investment beyond the equipment you already own. A little creativity, a good planned out performance, and some basic marketing can open the door to additional bookings and revenue.

On Tuesday, February 7, DJ Advocate Mark Ferrell returns to the Mobile Beat seminar lineup after his 2011 national tour with a presentation entitled “Shout of Mouth.” In this pull-no-punches seminar, Mark Ferrell examines what it truly takes to be considered a professional mobile DJ and what it takes to charge well above the average rate in any market: Excellent Master of Ceremonies skills.

YOUTH EVENTS CAN PUSH YOUR SPEAKERS PAST THEIR LIMITS; HERE’S HOW TO GET YOUR SOUND UNDER CONTROL

Before we take our sound systems to school this fall, lets have a little education ABOUT sound systems. Teen events today can require a lot from our rigs, and there’s more to it than simply the attendees wanting you to liquefy their insides with nearly lethal doses of low frequency audio. The music industry itself has been waging the “Loudness Wars” and if we’re not careful, our sound systems can end up as “collateral damage.”

Before the significance of this becomes apparent, I would be remiss if we didn’t get a little nerdy and talk about the science of making sound. Specifically, how we make sound with transducers (speakers, in lay terms). Transducers are devices that convert one form of energy to another. In the case of a loudspeaker, it is converting electrical energy into acoustic energy. It does so by running an electric current through a coil of thin wire (the voice coil in the speaker), which then becomes an electromagnet. The voice coil operates in close proximity to a permanent magnet on the speaker. At one point, I’m sure we all witnessed how magnets of like and opposite polarity react to each other. Like polarities repel and opposite polarities attract. The magnetic reaction between the voice coil and the permanent magnet in a loudspeaker moves the cone in and out, which creates vibrations in the air. Voila! We have acoustic energy (sound).

SPEAKERS UNDER PRESSURE

So, now that you survived a paragraph of pure nerdspeak, you’re probably dying to know that your pain was worth it. It was. By understanding how a loudspeaker operates you’ll be far better equipped to understand why they fail, and thus how to prevent it. Often people believe that putting too much power to a loudspeaker is what causes failure, and while there is some truth to that, there is also a lot of misunderstanding. Loudspeakers can withstand tremendously large amounts of short term (peak) power. Music has numerous peaks and valleys, the latter of which allow the loudspeaker to recover and remain cool. Just about the worst thing you can do for a loudspeaker is to play a continuous tone at high levels for an extended period of time.

Worse yet is a phenomenon known as “speaker compression” or “power compression.” This occurs when the voice coil in a loudspeaker heats up. Some heating is normal during use, but it stands to reason that heavier use causes higher temperatures. As the voice coil heats up, its DC resistance increases. The increased resistance reduces the effective output of the loudspeaker by as much as 6dB. That’s the equivalent of reducing your amplifiers power by 75%! So, of course, as our loudspeakers produce less sound, our natural reaction is to “turn it up”—which only worsens the situation.

There’s another kind of compression to worry about as well. In this case it is the intentional reduction of recorded music’s dynamic range for artistic and other reasons. Judiciously applied, compression can give a track a pleasantly smooth and powerful sound, but when we compress music, we run out of dynamic range and the loudspeaker no longer has the opportunity to recover. Unfortunately, most modern dance tracks are heavily compressed during the recording process. Graphic A shows stereo waveforms from top to bottom for a country song, a hip-hop song, and a dance track. Notice how much more blue we see in the hip-hop and especially the dance track? The loudspeaker has much less chance to recover while playing these tracks at high levels. And the bad news isn’t over yet: This is where the so-called “Loudness Wars” come into play. In Graphic B (courtesy of Song Yanbo) you will see comparison waveforms from Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” from 1991, 1995 and 2007. Again you’ll notice the green sound waveform of the latest version filling up the dynamic range until it’s almost all “peak” during most of the song. Essentially, the Loudness Wars are a result of the record labels competing to make their songs “stand out” by increasing the amplitude of the track until more and more of it reaches the peak level for the recording. This has caused a reduction in the dynamic range, sometimes substantial, which not only degrades the quality of the audio, but makes our loudspeakers much more likely to heat up.

DRIVING THE RIGHT VEHICLE

The solution? Have enough rig for the gig. Don’t ask your loudspeakers to do what they were not designed to do. I strongly recommend having subwoofers for any teen event. They will produce the deep, low bass that’s desired and take the pressure off of your full range boxes.

How much rig do you need? I wish there was an “Easy” button for this, but unfortunately there is not. Loudspeakers vary in efficiency, output, frequency response and pattern of coverage. But here are some rough rules of thumb though, to simplify the equation. For teen dances of 200 to 400 kids in an average-sized gymnasium I would recommend a minimum of a pair of 18” subs and a pair of 12” or 15” 2-way tops, with a peak output of no less than 129 dB (1M). For 400 to 1000, you’re probably going to want at least four 18” subs (or two dual 18s), preferably in a center-coupled arrangement. Placing the subs next to each other will produce a gain of approximately 3dB of output. More than two tops may be required here. If you use full range boxes placed closely together, be sure they are splayed at the horn angles to give adequate coverage over the dancefloor area, and to avoid interference between the boxes. Be sure to get the horns of your top boxes slightly above head level to allow the smaller wavelengths (higher frequencies) to cover the dancefloor. (Loudspeaker placement is another topic, all of its own, and my colleague Stu Chisholm covered the basics of it on page 26 of MB’s March 2011 issue).

It is important to note that all speakers are not equal, no more than all cars are. Taking a family sedan to the racetrack will only lead to its early death, and it won’t perform as well as a car designed to race anyway.

WHEN THE LIGHTS GO ON, ARE YOU ON?

Mobile entertainers are show business performers. Like comedians, actors, singers, musicians, hypnotists, public speakers, improvisation players, and more, mobile entertainers are on stage—albeit a fluid, ever-evolving, not always ideal performance platform. It may not usually be a stage with curtain and footlights, but it’s show business nonetheless.

LIVING IN THE LIMELIGHT

So how do you prepare for the moment when the “curtain” rises and the lights illuminate? How do you prepare during “the half”—the sacrosanct 30 minutes just before a performance when the actor is in the dressing room, preparing to go on stage?

As Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey explains, “It can be 30 minutes of quiet contemplation or utter fear, depending on how the performance has been going.” How has your “half” been lately?

A TALE OF TWO ACTORS

Last the spring, I appeared in a local production of Couple Dating, an engaging comedy about a New York couple with a young child seeking to connect with other couples in similar circumstances—with unexpected results, insights gained and generous hilarity for the audience

Eight actors comprised the cast—the primary story couple (Bobby and Tess) and the three couples they “date.” I played the husband in the couple in the second to last scene of the play. Thus, we did not appear on stage until about 90 minutes into the production for what turned out to be a memorable 12-minute scenes.

I was paired with a very talented actress, Jenny MacKenzie, with whom I connected well during auditions. Our call time was generally 30 minutes before the proverbial lights went on, so Jenny and I had about two hours to wait before our scene.

The backstage machinations of many theatrical productions organically develop their own preparation rhythm. Jenny and I developed ours with each other and the other actors during our 16-show run.

We rarely said two words to each other for the two hours backstage before we did our scene. Jenny often read, texted, did her makeup, dressed for the scene and, occasionally, quietly chatted with the other actors. I usually completed work on a laptop, reviewed my lines, blocking and cues, read, changed clothes and helped do the dishes at intermission (it’s community theater—actors are often the crew, too!) Just before we entered the stage together, we each made our final preparations.

Jenny would check her purse for the items needed in the scene, review her clothes and ensure that she had a finger ready to ring the doorbell on cue. Typically, I engage in some physical movement to get into character. So, just before Jenny rang the doorbell, I would round out my shoulders, cock my head slightly back and stand as erect as possible to become the confident persona of Scott.

And, after we completed our scene? We were often as chatty as two long-lost friends on a chance meeting.

Far from the result of deliberate planning, the rhythm evolved during rehearsals and the show’s run, becoming a comfort zone of preparation for Jenny, myself and the rest of the cast.

SHOWTIME!

How do you prepare for your entrance on the mobile “stage,” the moment when you are in the “spotlight” of the party guests’ attention at your event? What is your rhythm in preparing for a gig? What do you do during your version of the half?

A significant part of your preparation may be tied to the primary role you are playing that evening. Are you an emcee? A music programmer? A director? Gamemaster? Dancer?

YES AND…

For the last six years, I’ve been a member of Triage, a local improvisational troupe. When we are in the half, we do a variety of exercises and short games to get the blood flowing, elevate the energy and sharpen our minds for the performance. Our final activity before heading out on stage? We form a circle, put our hands together in the center and look each other in the eye as we declare, “Got your back!”

Our preparation is a combination of best practices in the art and organically developed activities that work for our group. What works for you?

CATCH THE RHYTHM

Some entertainers may meditate, seek quiet time, exercise, or eat a small meal before a performance. In my twenty-plus years as a mobile entertainer, I’ve developed a pre-event rhythm of setting up 30 to 60 minutes before the scheduled start of the event or, at least, well in advance of guest arrival. Then, I walk the entire entertainment space checking not only sound, but perspective and feel.

After making any necessary tweaks in the sound, I review my notes, agenda and any other information about the event to refresh the energy I need to portray. Then, I visit the facilities to freshen up and just before I depart, look in the mirror, make sure my smile is keen, flash a Hawaiian shake hand sign to the mirror, and give a chuckle. Now, I am ready to entertain.

FIND YOUR SPACE

There is no single correct method to prepare for an event, to work the half. But, like Jenny and me, if you do not have yours yet, look for the right formula to put yourself in the best frame of mind to offer your clients a memorable event!

Mobile Beat Hall Of Famer Mark Ferrell, who is credited with moving DJ professionalism and the Mobile Beat Shows onto a higher plane, will make his first Mobile Beat speaking appearance since 2003 on Tuesday afternoon, February 1. As Show Producer Mike Buonaccorso tells it, “Before Mark, DJ seminars were mostly made up of panels of three or four individuals with little preparation beforehand. I guess that reflects on my own learning curve for the first three years of putting shows together. Now almost all seminars are solo,by presenters with proven expertise in their subject areas.”

Ferrell joins previously announced former WWF wrestler Ted DiBiase presenting the Keynote “Champion in Any Field”, and many other presenters speaking on relevant topics such as mic technique, school dances, consultation skills, and much, much more.

Ted DiBiase achieved championship success in a number of wrestling promotions, holding thirty titles during his professional wrestling career. He is arguably best recalled to mainstream audiences for his time in the WWF (World Wrestling Federation).

DiBiase’s favorite saying was “Every man has his price.” Known as the ”The Million Dollar Man”, he turned the wrestling world on its head, as an arrogant, self-centered character, at one point even winning ‘Most Hated Wrestler of the Year’.

He carried himself like a self-imposed ruler to those around him. The character of the Million Dollar Man was fulfilled by wealth and power and controlled by greed. It did not matter who, what, when, where or why, DiBiase was determined to always get his way. But when fame and a fabricated lavish lifestyle entrapped him in the persona of his wrestling character, Ted realized “The Million Dollar Man” had gone too far.

Today,Ted is a full time motivational speaker and evangelist. He speaks to meetings, corporate businesses, church congregations, youth groups and in public schools and universities all over the country on hard work, discipline, determination and passion.
