About:
Jay Brannen
Jay Brannen been in the DJ business for 17 years now, starting with bands and sound and light work as well as promotions and bar management. Personally he has been happily married for 8 years and have two boys, Connor 6 and Colin 3 and lives in Southern California. Jay owns a Brannen Entertainment, a mobile DJ company and has been a full time DJ for 12 years now, primarily in Weddings and Parties (Clubs, dances, corporate). Within the industry he is one of the two moderators for Pioneer Pro DJ on their forums, as well as a demonstrator and product specialist traveling to most of the DJ shows annually.
Jay's off time is spent with my wife and boys doing anything that involves getting out of the house. Traveling to the desert, mountains or even out of state is a joy when with his family. The odd round of Golf or quick Vegas get away doesn't hurt either!
Jay's Goals For His Blog
Lifting the standards of the mobile DJ is a goal of mine and I hope by showing how DJs can better do their job and make more money at it with accomplish this goal. We as mobile DJs are poised to take over the Entertainment business on several levels. Weddings are great and can provide a good income, but getting into the Club world will pay dividends in future work and bettering a DJs skills.
I want to show DJs that haven't worked at a Bar/Club that their talents from the Weddings and dances they're already doing is what they need to succeed in the Club world. We as mobiles have to read the crowd and do what's ultimately best for the bride and groom or client, Club work is the same thing just less talking! Yes there are nuances that come into play and that will be addressed along with the various styles of music that may be helpful to have.
Giving a DJ more confidence to do his or her job in a bad market, making more money, and having a good time doing it; the goal of all and any worker today. Interviews from top end pro DJs, a list of sources where music can be found LEGALLY, a guide to what tools are needed, getting the most out of your gear for the club scene, creating a "buzz" about yourself, marketing to the bars and clubs, and ultimately being a better DJ to name a few of the goals that this bi-weekly blog plans to accomplish.

So you have your gear all set up and your ready to play, this time for a Bride and Groom, next time a corporate retirement party. You’ve got your music and lights and a plan. The entire event rests on your shoulders because your a DJ, your the DJ. Now what if your Bride and Groom or retiree was at a Club and just hanging out looking to dance and have fun; is this really any different than your weddings and parties? Being a mobile DJ allows you the luxury of having crowds of strangers, all with the same goal, have a good time due to your ability. Welcome to a mobile DJ that can easily work in a Club.
This blog is to open the eyes of mobile DJs to trying and ultimately working in Clubs. With the new economic challenges that we must face in the mobile market, the Club world opens up as another source of revenue. Yes the tough times will affect the Clubs, so having DJs who can read the crowd and deliver a great performance will be a huge asset to the owners. The gigs that we do on a weekly basis require more preparing and time than any Club event, so we are already in a position to succeed in that environment.
I will be discussing the old and new music that gets played in the clubs. The mix skills that will come into play, and the gear used. All the various things needed to be a Club DJ coming from a mobile background. We read the crowd and make the night fun through our track selection; that’s exactly what a Club DJ does. I will also be interviewing club DJs who have done mobile gigs and asking what differences they have seen and encountered. I want you to be open to making more money based on your talent and love of being a mobile DJ; it is that simple.
