Assemble the Squad

June 19, 2017 by Joe Bunn

Let’s face it, running a DJ company is hard work, especially if you are a multi-op owner and dealing with other DJs/egos other than just your own. In reality, owning a small business period is hard as hell. I know how hard it is to actually make a buck. One way to be successful is to surround yourself with the right people. They don’t have to be full-timers, they just need to be a part of your team. I’m going to point out a few key people that you need on your “squad” and then I’m going to hope you reach out to these folks in your area after reading this!

Accountant. Hands down, this is the most important person on your team. You have to have a great accountant. Even if you do payroll yourself and pay all of your bills and keep your accounts, reconciled, you still need this person! There is no way (unless you’re a certified CPA) that you can possibly know all of the relevant tax laws. Please be smart and get yourself a good accountant. You can choose how much or how little that they do, just get one!

Attorney. It’s always a good idea to have a couple of different attorneys on speed dial. A good business attorney can make sure you have a solid contract and be someone to reach out to should you ever get sued or threatened by a client. Might as well have a local attorney ready for that inevitable speeding ticket you’re going to get speeding to a gig through traffic too.

Intern. Reach out to local colleges, post on Craig’s List or social media and get yourself an intern! They are invaluable and most of them will work for free just to learn how to DJ or learn more about the service business. They can handle so many of the little weekly jobs that eat up your valuable time! Can you say social media?

Gear Guy. Make sure you have a gear dealer on your list of favorites. When you need advice on something, refer to that person for their expertise and then actually buy from them! Is it cheaper on Amazon? Maybe, but Amazon will never answer the questions your really have!

Handyman. I have a couple of these folks at the top of my list. Not only can they do random projects in the office, but they can usually figure out how to build or modify something when I have one of my crazy ideas. I’m lucky in that I have DJs on staff that do all types of stuff full time-AC repair, fiberglass expert, electrician, etc. etc. Everyone needs a good handyman (or woman)

Right hand man/woman. Sometimes it’s all just a little too much to handle. Before you hit that place in your life, have a right hand man/woman in place to bear some of the burden. Maybe it’s one of your DJs that you pay a little more than your other staff members, maybe it’s a family member. It’s a part time job for them, easy extra money. This is not a burden on your wallet, but rather a way to free up some of your time for more profitable projects!

I’m sure I’ll think of more team members and will continue this in a future blog post! Get your squad assembled in the meantime!
