A New Spin on salad

Salad is generally not considered man food. We tend to view salad as a small plate of raw green stuff with no flavor. Our perception of salad largely comes from the little side salads we get at events. The truth is you can eat almost a pound of salad mix at one sitting and it only has around 100 calories. Salad doesn’t have to be boring either.
On a recent episode of Dr. Oz several doctors and experts explained the benefits of making salad a main part of your daily diet. Having a large salad before lunch and dinner loads your body up with fiber, sugar blockers, anti-cancer agents and a host of other nutritional bennies. You will also feel fuller, longer. Salad can be had for breakfast as well (think fresh fruit). One expert in particular, Dr. Fuhrman explained the correct way of getting the most nutrients out of salad and into your body.
According to Dr. Fuhrman you should mix several types of leafy greens like kale, baby spinach, arugula and lettuce with carrots, tomatoes, nuts, seeds or fresh fruits. The trick is in the dressing. Processed mayonnaise (oil) based dressings and even “fat free” dressings block the nutrients from entering your body. Using a nut based or seed based dressing increases the rate at which nutrients are absorbed into your body and provides additional health benefits, like lowering cholesterol. Dr. Fuhrman also has a powerful health book titled “The End of Dieting”. Definitely worth a good read.
Be creative and experiment. Simply adding 4 oz of your favorite lean protein like grilled chicken breast, pure grass feed beef, turkey or bison will make your plain salad a meal. Experiment with different seasonings and flavors. If you like cheese on your salad use very little and make sure it is real and not processed. Remember you can make salad big and make it “man style”. Just make salad your friend. Your body will thank you.

PS if you have the chance to visit the Dr. Oz show in NYC, do it. Tickets for tapings are free. My wife and I went last year. We got to meet Rachel Ray, Bobby Brown and had a blast in the studio. Visit here: http://www.doctoroz.com/tickets
