If you feel you got comfortable using your fun and simple plug-and-play fixtures, it’s time you step out of your comfort zone and consider an upgrade—especially if the events you usually book are weddings, corporate functions, high school parties or bar mitzvahs.
Don’t misunderstand me, effect lighting is definitely worth it. But is it enough? What if you bring in some uplighting? Or some laser beams? What if you could upsell these options? Read below to find out the benefits of going beyond basic effect lighting:
1. Make more money. Rethinking the contents of your rig makes it much easier for you to upsell. You can make an additional $500 to $1,500 per gig, depending on the area you live. You might feel it’s a big investment to add some wash lights or moving heads, but keep in mind that you can make back the money after booking only two or three weddings.
2. Please even the pickiest client. The bride can be tough to please; and you should be prepared to offer her the best services. Switching to DMX-controlled lighting, buying some lasers, wash lights or a fog machine can substantially improve the quality of your events. Plus, you will have much better control of your shows and can offer a variety of options to your customers. Also, uplighting is the latest trend. You can get as elaborate as using wireless fixtures or those controlled with a remote. With such equipment you won’t have problems creating an impressive grand entrance for the bride and groom, or preparing custom-made shows in advance.
3. Build a reputation and grow your business. Word of mouth travels fast, but you also want it to travel to your advantage. A pleased customer can mean a recommendation for another gig. Professionalism and dedication are keys to helping you step out of the DJ crowd. After three to four elaborate and flawless shows people will start noticing, and you will be on your way to becoming a name in the business.
Tip! To convince your potential client to opt for a sophisticated show, make sure you show him/her the difference. A photo is worth a thousand words, and the ‘Sweet 16’ girl can see right away how cool the fancy lighting is as opposed to the basic lighting. Take photos at all of your events, keep them handy, or put some time into it and create a portfolio. This will also add to your professionalism and credibility.
