Introducing the Wharfedale Pro Titan 8A MKII
February 26, 2011
Introducing the Wharfedale Pro Titan 8A MKII
Wharfedale Pro proudly announces the new Titan 8A MKII. New features and improved amplifier technology make the Titan 8A MKII an even better solution for portable sound and fixed installation applications.
The 2 band EQ from the Titan 12A and 15A now features in the more compact 8A MKII model allowing fine tuning of the overall sound. In addition a rear mounted horn LED defeat switch has been added to switch off the throat mounted power LED, for use in situations where visual transparency is paramount.
Class D technology is now used for both the LF and HF sections, resulting in a more efficient and powerful system that is now even lighter than the previous generation. The Titan 8A MKII is bi-amplified with independent LF and HF signal limiting.
The Titan 8A MKII provides enough output and low frequency extension to be a standalone vocal PA for A/V and presentation work, or combined with a subwoofer for a portable band or DJ setup.
The compact and stylish form factor, range of compatible Wharfedale Pro WPB brackets and versatile rigging points make the Titan 8A MKII an equally suitable choice for an installed background music or paging solution. As with the previous generation the Titan 8A MKII is available in black, grey or white. The angled cabinet also makes the Titan 8A MKII a fantastic compact vocal foldback monitor.

Is the grinding issue improving at schools?
February 25, 2011
The School Dance Network continues to grow in numbers, both DJ membership and School administration subscribers. It clearly points to the ever growing desire to get a handle on the school dance issues that are hurting the DJ industry and creating turmoil at schools. New DJ Member Eric Lyte from New York sent his observation:
“I commend your goal at this website. I have been a dj for over 20 years and have always pointed out the importance of playing clean edited music. The Grinding dancing is slowly being addressed and I beleive you are headed in the correct direction. However you have no requirments for membership other than agreeing to the Dj code. What about being licensed & insured? Being a legitimate Dj & obtaining legal music (((almost))) guarantees the Dj will have clean music. We go to such great lengths to protect our children, yet our Schools are not required to hire anyone licensed or the likes. I have sent emails to the top of the N.Y. state educational system advising them to have every school sign up at thh School Dance Network. I suggest you take the next step and make the Dj have Proof of Insurance, licensing and at least ask them how they obtain their music. I subscribe to TMStudios myself. Thank you.” Eric Lyte
While he has a great point and I love the input…. I hope he is right, that the grinding issue may be slowly gaining some attention and resolutions are being implemented. And passing this on to the New York Education system is absolutely terrific. I also agree that DJs should certainly be playing legal music and have the necessary licensing and insurance of any small business. I just can’t find the direct connection with that and their desire and intent to help schools with the dance issues that they face. In other words, a DJ can be licensed, insured and playing all legal (albeit inappropriate) music and still not be an advocate for the school administration at the performance. So we would be making requirements that have no direct effect on the performance.
DJs that ascribe to a written code, and spend $50 of their hard earned money to stand behind it usually have the right intent. (We also remove any DJ member if there is even one legitimate complaint from a school about their performance.)
What do you think, is the grinding problem being addressed and improving? Let me know what you think.
Thanks

Min Wash Gets Down In Baltimore
February 25, 2011
MIN™ WASH GETS DOWN IN BALTIMORE
SUNRISE, Fla. – CHAUVET®, a leading manufacturer of LED lighting, announced 40 MiN™ Wash RGBW [http://www.chauvetlighting.com/min-wash-rgbw.html] palm-sized moving heads were installed in a new ultra lounge in Baltimore called The Get Down [link: http://getdownbaltimore.com/]. The lights were specified by lighting and production designer Scott Chmielewski, president of Digital Media Designs [link: http://digitalmediadesigns.net/] and co-owner of the lounge with partner, Bryan Burkert.
The lounge resides in a former music room called Fletcher’s that underwent a swanky transformation to become a hip happy hour and dance night ultra lounge. It is three stories tall and encompasses 7,000 square feet of dance floors, DJ booths, bars, balconies and, of course, lights. The lights—MiN™ Wash RGBW and a plethora of other LED-fitted fixtures—are everywhere, but are discreetly placed throughout the club. The beauty of MiN™ Wash RGBW fixtures is they are small enough to fit in the palm of a hand and have become a staple of night clubs where low energy consumption and discreet operation are important.
“The [MiN™ Wash RGBW] are bright enough for presence and small enough to disappear,” said Chmielewski. “They are literally everywhere; hanging from the ceiling and other structures. They are undetectable and give a large amount of light.”
A green approach was taken towards the club’s overall design. The floors, bars and walls are made from 100 percent recyclable materials. Every light incorporated in the club is LED-based, save the Edison light bulbs from the 1920s. These vintage bulbs are found in the two small ‘Edison rooms’ hanging at random heights and are employed for their cool look and a “sexy, warm glow—more objects than fixtures.” There are also recycled blue banquettes on one of the dance floors, salvaged from famed club Roxy.
“It was the right thing to do,” said Chmielewski of the green design. “And it was done without compromise to the cost, design or aesthetic of the club.”
The rest of the spaces include unique design elements like carefully constructed wall treatments and floating video screens coupled with the building’s original 1920s brick surfaces and exposed wood. The ‘woven wall’ design covers significant portions of the club and is comprised of 10-inch segments of a custom made black material which are woven together to create a textured surface over LED lights. When these lights are off, it appears to be an opaque surface, but when the LEDs are on, they shine through and create a color-changing panel effect.
Other walls feature a layered geometric design element whereby the outer layer stands four inches off the wall and is lit from behind. There is another section where the walls are covered by pulp bamboo which is downlit from the ceiling above in fuchsia. High-definition LCD video screens, encased in backlit structures which stand off the wall, seem to float around the second floor loft while displaying organic imagery. All the elements combined create what Chmielewski describes as an “immersive experience.”
“It’s a small, funky, intimate place,” said Chmielewski, “and there’s not a surface in the building that doesn’t change color.”

The Gaga Factor-Giant leap on the Safe Songs Top 30
February 22, 2011
From Forbes–Lady Gaga Sets iTunes Sales Record
Feb. 18 2011
“In less than a week Lady Gaga has sold 1 million digital copies of her newest song, Born This Way, making it the fastest selling single ever on iTunes. The song has already hit No. 1 in 23 countries, according to Interscope Geffen A&M.
Combine that with Gaga’s three Grammy Awards and it’s been a good week for the pop singer. Born This Way is the first single off of Gaga’s upcoming album of the same name. Her manager, Troy Carter, has said that he wants to sell 30 million copies of the new album. As my colleague Zack O’Malley Greenburg reported, that’s an ambition goal.
But even if she doesn’t sell quite that many copies, a successful new album could put Gaga well on her way to earning $100 million next year. We estimated her earning at $62 million for our Celebrity 100 last year. That added revenue is going to come from Gaga making ‘the transition from an arena act playing 20,000-seat venues to an artist capable of selling out 80,000-seat football stadiums,” according to Greenburg.”
NOTE: Two new adds to the NATIONAL DO NOT PLAY LIST: Snoop Dog- Wet/Sweat (either version is obnoxious) and Kanye West with Jay Z – H*A*M. ( I can’t remember the last Kanye West song that wasn’t objectionable for schools.)
Here are the most popular school dance songs this week (That are safe to play) 2-22-11

Chauvet Debuts Over 30 New Products!
February 22, 2011
CHAUVET® DEBUTS OVER 30 NEW PRODUCTS AT NAMM 2011
SUNRISE, Fla. – CHAUVET®, a leading manufacturer of LED lighting, announced over 30 new products were released at The NAMM Show 2011 in Anaheim, Calif., including 21 new LED fixtures, six new lasers, two new controllers and all-new CHAUVET® travel bags. Additionally, almost all CHAUVET® fixtures have Edison power linking which make them very compatible and easy to use with other fixtures.
A bountiful selection of new LED-based scanners, effect and wash lights, as well as hazers, controllers and lasers were introduced to the crowd at NAMM which was held January 13 – 16, 2011. During the show, GRAMMY® award-winning bassist, Victor Wooten and fellow bassist, Quintin Berry, performed to hundreds of tradeshow goers at the CHAUVET® booth.
“We brought over 30 new fixtures to the show,” said CHAUVET® National Sales Director, Jamey Brock. “I think we have a number of incredible and affordable products for the music industry. It was an exciting show, with great music, and I’m looking forward to getting back with everyone who stopped by to see us.”
Below are a few selected products with the full 2011 catalog available on the CHAUVET® website [link:
Specifically designed for the mobile DJ is a new gobo projector called Gobo Zoom™ LED [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/gobo-zoom-led.html]. It comes with eight gobos, a set of four colored gels and the ability to manually zoom for short-throw or long-throw applications. The super-compact projector has one 10W LED, operates on up to two channels of DMX control or can be configured for stand-alone use. Due to the low-heat found in an LED fixture, custom gobos can be created on transparency film and easily inserted into the projector.
Joining the MiN™ family of palm-sized lighting fixtures are three new, ultra-compact lasers: MiN™ Laser FX [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/min-laser-fx.html], MiN™ Laser RGX [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/min-laser-rgx.html] and MiN™ Laser Star [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/min-laser-star.html].
Three new Scorpion™ lasers were introduced featuring the patented Fat Beam™ laser technology, which creates beams four times thicker than a standard laser, and some bold color options. The green, violet and/or cyan Scorpion™ GVC [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/scorpion-gvc.html; the red, green and/or yellow Scorpion™ RGY [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/scorpion-rgy.html]; and the red, violet and/or magenta Scorpion™ RVM [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/scorpion-rvm.html]. All three are linkable to create a full-spectrum laser show.
Three new scanners joined the Intimidator™ family with sleeker, lighter-weight housings, brighter LED lighting sources, and linkable power options to save from running multiple cables during setup. Intimidator™ Scan Led 100 [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/intimidator-scan-led-100.html] has a combined gobo and color wheel with seven patterns and six channels of DMX control. Intimidator™ Scan LED 200 [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/intimidator-scan-led-200.html] has separate gobo (five metal and two glass) and color (seven split colors) wheels—each offer continuous spin at variable speeds—and up to eight channels of DMX control. Intimidator™ Scan LED 300 [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/intimidator-scan-led-300.html] also has separate gobo (five metal and two glass) and color (eight split colors) wheels and includes a three-sided prism, remote focus, interchangeable, slot-n-lock gobos with continuous spin at variable speed and up to 11 channels of DMX control.
In the effect light category are over a dozen new LED-fitted fixtures—many room-covering options with or without DMX control. Circus™ [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/circus.html] is an ever-changing, multi-colored light with razor-sharp beams from five separate, synchronized pods featuring red, green, blue, white and amber LEDs. Its effects can be seen with or without fog, offering fantastic effects in the air or on any surface. It has up to three channels of DMX control or can be used in any of the awesome sound-activated or built-in automated programs.
Sweeper™ LED [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/sweeper-led.html] and 6Spot™ [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/6spot.html] are two effect lights that feature six 3W, tri-colored LEDs and can be linked together, working in master/slave mode, for larger, coordinated shows. They both have sound-activated and built-in automated programs and up to 20 units can be power linked together to save on setup time. Sweeper™ LED has six pods of LEDs, contained in a single casing, which can be individually controlled for amazing color chases, sequences and effect combinations. 6Spot™ has six spot lights that are less than four inches, can fit almost anywhere and can be moved independently for total room or stage coverage. It can be setup or taken down in minutes, mounting easily to the 4BAR™ system or any universal tripod, and comes with its own travel bag.
The quad-colored effect light, Comet™ LED [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/comet-led.html] uses red, green, blue and white LEDs to shoot crisp beams of light that cover an entire room. This plug-and-play fixture has sound-activated effects and a motor that spins in both directions for a swirling effect that looks great with or without fog. Save time by power linking up to 80 units together instead of running cables and extension cords.
Two all-new, extremely affordable, soft-sided CHAUVET® travel bags debuted as well. Each offer removable dividers to keep multiple fixtures packed safely for transport and convenient side pockets for cables, clamps and other accessories. CHS-50 [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/chs-50.html] is the larger of the two and features built-in wheels and a retractable handle for transporting larger fixtures with ease. CHS-40 [link: http://www.chauvetlighting.com/chs-40.html] has a convenient handle and shoulder strap to suit different transportation styles.
