Vestax Ships the new PDX-3000MkII Pro DJ Turntable
December 28, 2010
Vestax Ships the new PDX-3000MkII Pro DJ Turntable
Vestax is very pleased to announce the PDX-3000MKII professional turntable is now shipping. The PDX-3000MkII features a new high-precision platter, new digital torque simulator system, advanced MIDI pitch control capabilities, direct drive DC motor, anti-skipping tone arm system, and reverse mode.
The new high-precision platter is controlled by an advanced 32-bit digital servo motor that continuously optimizes the balance between the platter weight and rotary inertia enabling DJs to perform with more stability and accuracy. The digital servo firmware is the brain of the control circuitry and has been designed with a new torque simulator system, a first of its kind feature. DJs can use the torque simulator to adjust the rotation torque of the motor to their preference. The direct drive DC motor has a maximum torque of 4.7CN/cm, and reaches a constant speed within 0.5 seconds of pushing the start button.
The PDX-3000MkII provides DJs with the choice of Performance and Mix modes. Performance Mode provides rapid acceleration/deceleration and maintains a constant motor speed to keep the rhythm and pitch steady no matter how hard DJs spin and scratch, while Mix Mode, allows DJs enables precise rpm and pitch control with just the slightest touch.
The PDX-3000MkII includes Vestax’s patented and acclaimed Anti-Skipping Tone-arm System (A.S.T.S.). Designed to reduce the inner and outer force of the needle, ASTS technology suppresses horizontal vibrations, thus ensuring high sound quality and stable playback.
The PDX-3000MKII’s redesigned ultra pitch fader controls the pitch range by +/-50%. Combined with the fine pitch fader, a total pitch control of +/-60 % is possible. MIDI inputs are provided allowing external MIDI control of pih.
Vestax realizes the continued importance of professional turntables and is proud to offer the PDX-3000MkII, the perfect turntable to use for any style of DJing.

Allen and Heath Launches Digital Mixer
December 28, 2010
ALLEN & HEATH LAUNCHES GROUND-BREAKING NEW DIGITAL DJ MIXER
Allen & Heath has unveiled the Xone:DB4, a ground-breaking fully digital, high performance DJ mixer with a unique Quad FX Core DSP engine, providing 4 FX BPM Loop record engines with channel EQ filters. Other key features are multi-channel USB audio with MIDI, analogue and digital I/O, input source matrix, easy to read OLED display screen, and USB for recalling user set ups.
The heart of the Xone:DB4 is the powerful Quad FX Core DSP engine, enabling each channel to have its own FX bank and BPM detection system, which automatically adjusts all time-related FX and loops to the tempo of the music. There are 5 basic studio quality FX types optimised for DJ use, comprising delays, reverbs, modulators, resonators and damage, plus each FX type has a patch library of different effect variations that can be assigned to the relevant control. Each FX bank has a dedicated expression control and a rotary pot to set the wet/dry level, whilst further effect tweaking can be performed using the global controllers in the FX master section
In addition to the FX, each channel has a built-in looper, with selectable loop length from 1/64 beat to 4 bars using the rotary encoder. No matter what loop length is selected, the Xone:DB4 will always record the maximum of 4 bars, so the loop can be expanded or shrunk at will. With an intuitive layout similar to the industry standard Xone:92, there are also two filter banks on either side of the main mix channels.
Each music channel can select any of the available stereo audio sources: Analogue Line 1-4 (switchable to Phono on 2 – 3), Digital 1-4, or USB 1-4. Additionally, the Mic/Auxiliary channel can be routed through channel 1 for further processing.
Each music channel has a 3-band EQ that can be configured as standard asymmetric EQ (+6/-25dB), total Kill (+6dB/OFF with a 24dB/octave slope), or reconfigured as a High-Pass/Low-Pass filter system with adjustable resonance. The EQ knobs incorporate an illuminated pointer that changes colour as a visual aid to show which type of equalization has been selected.
There is a Mic/Auxiliary input to the left of the main mixer section, providing 2-band EQ, gain, cue, and mix level. This can also be routed to channel 1 if you wish to add FX to this channel. To the right of the main mixer is the master section, with main mix level, booth level, and headphone monitoring system.
The OLED display is clearly visible even in bright sunlight, and displays each channel FX selection and current BPM, as well as being an easy and intuitive interface for the Menu set up functions. The mixer offers many user defined settings, such as meter mode, BPM range, USB audio routing scheme, display brightness, in addition to the extensive built-in FX library, and these settings can be saved to a USB key for recall on another unit, such as in a fixed club installation.
There is a built-in, multi-channel USB2 soundcard allowing replay and recording from computer-based audio software for 4 stereo sends and 4 stereo returns. All controls (except Mic and Phones level) send MIDI data but the mixer can double up as a MIDI controller via the MIDI shift button, which allows the Loop and FX selection controls to send MIDI data without changing the mixer settings.
The Xone:DB4 has a new stylish, lightweight aluminium chassis designed to make touring with the console easy. Other features include assignable deck starts, crossfader and upfader curve controls, 13-point level metering, digital output, analogue balanced outputs for main mix and booth, and a record output with adjustable level.
“The Xone:DB4 is a truly ground-breaking mixer and by far the most advanced product that we have designed. Every feature has been meticulously researched with a view to offering DJ’s ultimate creativity,” comments Xone design manager, Andy Rigby-Jones. “Based on the iLive pro-touring FX system, we developed FX algorithms with BPM conscious parameters and tight spectral control, customised to perfectly fit the DJ environment. As the loops and FX are automatically synchronised to the tempo of the song, it is very easy to build some amazing grooves and soundscapes without problems of latency, low fidelity and the general hassle often associated with using software and laptops. The icing on the cake is the flexible input matrix, where any audio source can be selected on any or all of the channels. Different processing can be applied to the same track on separate channels and you can fade between them, or a phrase sampled in the looper of one channel can be added to the mix later in the track. Our digital design team has done an incredible job to ensure that this is one of the most innovative and exciting DJ mix tools to date.”

White Is The New Black For Pioneer
December 22, 2010
IS THE NEW BLACK FOR PIONEER’S DJ DIGITAL PLAYER AND MIXER
Packaged CDJ-350-W and DJM-350-W System Available in a New Fashion Color – Pearl White
LONG BEACH, Calif. (December 21, 2010) – Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. Professional Sound and Visual Division today introduced a new pearl white version of its entry-level DJ system comprising of two CDJ-350-W digital media players and a DJM-350-W 2-channel mixer. As the popularity of music remixing increases, Pioneer continues to offer consumers the best way to engage in the art by offering innovative and fashionable DJ gear. The new pearl white CDJ-350-W and DJM-350-W models not only add a fashion statement to DJ performances but also offer two additional audio effects – Noise and Short Echo.
“Offering our gear in more colors than the traditional black is generating new excitement within the DJ community. The HDJ-500 entry level headphones we introduced several months ago are now available in three colors, and are creating a lot of buzz with DJs. We are looking forward to the same reaction with the new pearl white version of the CDJ-350 and DJM-350s,” said David Arevalo, senior marketing manager, Professional Sound and Visual Division for Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.
Spin It with the CDJ-350-W Multi-media Player
The CDJ-350-W will allow users to create DJ performances with various digital music files, including MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF files that are stored on different forms of media, including USB mass storage device class products*1 and CD-R/RW discs. The media player also includes Pioneer’s proprietary music management software, rekordbox™, which analyzes and categorizes music by genre, making it possible to easily manage music files on a computer for quick song selection when played back on compatible Pioneer players. Connecting a USB storage device loaded with playlists created with the software allows users to choose songs by various criteria such as genre, album name, artist name, etc. for stress-free DJ performances. Music sessions can also be saved to a USB storage device and then saved in rekordbox as an original playlist.
Additional Player Highlights:
- BEAT Display Function – Visually illustrates the beat position of a song and the playback point providing easier hand-eye coordination when performing scratches and loops.
- Auto Beat Loop Function – With one press of a button on the player, the user can create various loop performances, including:
- Beat Loop – Matches the beat and repeats a 4-beat loop
- Loop Divide – While playing a loop, plays the loop at a different rhythm
- Hot Loop – While playing a loop, returns to the start of the loop and plays it
- Auto BPM Lock – Users can set a Master Beat Per Minute (BPM) of the current song playing that can be synchronized with a touch of a button. The feature enables beginners to easily match the tempos of songs by simply adjusting the speed to the Master BPM on each player.
- Create Playlist Function – While a song is playing, users can immediately add it to a new playlist with a touch of a button for future playback of favorite songs.

- DJ Software Compatible – The CDJ-350-W is MIDI-compatible with other DJ software allowing it to be used as an audio interface.
Other features include:
-
- Vibration resistant by utilizing Shock-Proof Memory3 and Floating Architecture.
- Four level tempo settings*3 for maximum variation range of a song’s tempo (±6%, ±10%, ±16% and WIDE).
- Resume function enables users to remove a disc and resume playback at the same spot when the disc is reloaded.
- Environment-friendly auto standby feature automatically detects operation status and signal input and puts the device in standby mode when the player is not engaged for set periods of time. Users can set the time value or can defeat the feature altogether.
Blend It with the DJM-350-W Mixer
The DJM-350-W mixer inherits similar functions and operability of the popular Pioneer DJM series of mixers often experienced in the club scene. With its new pearl white makeover, the built-in level meter’s red, white and blue LEDs create a stunning appearance. The mixer is equipped with four sound effects including the newly added Noise and Short Echo, as well as an isolated 3-band equalizer—all of which allow the DJ to make one-of-a-kind mixes. The Type A USB port on the front top panel allow users to record their DJ mixes onto a USB storage device, review their mix and take it with them to listen to on other devices.
Additional Mixer Highlights:
- Four Types of Effects – Two effects, Noise and Short Echo, were added to the popular Filter and Jet effects enabling users to further enhance remixing capabilities:
- Noise - Creates a wind-like effect by changing the cut-off frequency (audible spectrum) of the filter
- Short Echo – Applies a reverberated sound to the music with a turn of the knob
- Filter - Greatly alters the tonal quality of the music by removing audio from the high or low frequency bands
- Jet - Applies a jet plane taking off or landing sound effect to the music
- Digital Conversion – Analog signals are converted into digital form via a high-performance CPU for higher fidelity sound. In addition, analog and digital circuits are isolated to minimize induced noise.
Other features include:
-
- P-LOCK Fader Cap keeps the fader knob (caps) from slipping off, especially during intense DJ sessions.
- MIC/AUX input terminals for connecting portable audio players and/or microphones.
- A connected Pioneer CDJ player can triggered to fader, start or play functions via a link to the fader control.
- Peak level meters indicate the input levels of each channel.
- Crossfader Curve Adjustment function makes it possible to have three crossover curve patterns.
Pioneer’s packaged pearl white DJ system will be available in January 2011 and come with two CDJ-350-W players and one DJM-350-W mixer for a suggested retail price of $2,445.

When You Can’t Play Your Biggest Request at a School Dance
December 20, 2010

DJs playing school and teen events have the responsibility of not only making sure the event is fun, but also age-appropriate. Of course, you’re doing all the right things such as playing only clean-edits of all your music and interacting professionally with the guests. Some music titles are strictly off-limits for teen events based on the content of the song, even when it’s cleaned up for explicit lyrics. Based on the age of your audience, your client’s expectations, and your own personal comfort level, you may decide one of your biggest requests is simply not worth the risk playing even in edited form. Do you completely avoid the title altogether? Is there a way you can safely give the impression you’ve played the song without the risk of potentially subjecting your audience to inappropriate content?
We’ve all seen movie trailers that contain footage that doesn’t actually appear in the movie. We are nonetheless drawn to watch the movie and how many of us complain that all the trailer footage wasn’t actually in the movie? The footage for the trailer was selected because it was perfect for teasing the movie, but wasn’t actually necessary to tell the actual story. As a DJ, if you can harness this notion with your music, you can “tease” titles that you are not actually playing.
At school and teen events, I use several pre-produced sweepers per hour to segue music. It gives our events a larger-than-life feel by having a quick, professionally-produced element running over or in between music. I have developed several of these sweepers to also incorporate music hooks of titles of our biggest requests that we do not normally play. By running these music sweepers, we are giving the impression of playing the title, but since it is very carefully edited down to just the hook, there is no inappropriate content. Since we just play the hook, the kids instantly go crazy and will dance for the 20 seconds of the hook. To hear what it sounds like, visit the following link:
http://www.schooldancepros.com/likeag6.mp3
Since these are just a “tease”, I think it is important to play these leading into another big hit, or else you’re setting yourself up for a bit of a buzz kill! With all of my pre-produced elements, I use them sparingly. However, incorporating music hooks of your biggest requests, regardless if you play them in full length, is a great way to brand your business with your audience as being in tune with their musical tastes.

Top 30 School Dance “Safe Songs”. Enrique Top debut
December 13, 2010
Music Notes:
Julio Eglesias’s youngest son is hot, with two hits on the Safe Songs Top 30 right now. Enrique Eglesiaas sexy love song “Tonight” is the highest debut song this week on our School Dance Chart. At the age of 35 he has sold 55 million albums. That’s big. But his 67 year old pop beats him by a mile, having sold 300 million records mostly in the 70s and 80s. But get this great story about his start:
Enrique didn’t want his Dad to know about his plans for a musical career and didn’t want his Dad’s name to be the reason for his successes. He borrowed money from his family nanny and he recorded a demo cassette tape. He promoted the songs with the help of Julio’s publicist using the stage name Enrique Martinez as supposedly an unknown singer from Guatemala. He dropped out of college, was signed by a small record label went to Toronto to record his first album in 1995. Now there is a whole generation that has no clue who Julio is….but Enrique is red hot. Now you know “the rest of the story”.

And whether someone is using StageSpot’s custom gobo creator or a full custom gobo, the process can be done 100% online and any time of the day or night. In addition, StageSpot offers an upload process for all full custom clients so that art stays with the order through the entirety of production. Finally, all StageSpot clients enjoy the site’s award-winning customer service.
“This is exciting for wedding and party DJs, or anyone without the ability to design their own gobo offline,” said StageSpot owner Kevin Richie. “The process is simple – we provide the art and fonts – and it couldn’t be more convenient.”
