Breaking News! Back to school makes headlines coast to coast
August 31, 2010
Television news rooms (MSNBC does this story) are charged with the task of making the nightly news compelling. Be local. Be timely. Dwell on the controversial. The perfect ingredients for a headline story about the confrontation that is a big part of back to school again this year: FREAK DANCING. Although the face-off between administrators and students regarding dance behavior at school dances has been an on-going issue for the past several years, the cameras and talking heads are back at it, making “grinding” a big back-to-school news item. After all, if there is no teachers strike, what back to school stories are there that have the magic ingredient of controversy.
So news flash: The headlines will roll once again with the stories of “grinding” at school dances that will inflame a whole new crop of students, and infuriate their respective parents….leaving the administrator in the middle to arbitrate and make homecoming a “respectable” school social event. Without the big fuss would the tension ease and the problem slowly diminish. Who knows. I do know it doesn’t help. Details at 11.
New Hyper Gem LED Looks Like 4 Moonflowers In 1
August 30, 2010
A FULL… FULL… FULL…FULL MOON!
New Hyper Gem LED Looks Like 4 Moonflowers In 1
It’s been called a “moonflower on steroids.” And with 256 red, green, blue and white LEDs shooting out beams through 4 lenses, American DJ’s new Hyper Gem LED is definitely a “performance-enhanced” special effect.
A 4-way DMX-controllable portable moonflower, the Hyper Gem LED will quickly hype up the excitement level at any club or disco, with a wide sweep of unique LED patterns that gyrate and groove to the beat of the music. Featuring 4 separate lenses and a 24° high and 94° wide beam angle, its sharp, brilliant beams will completely cover the dance floor at a mid-sized venue, making it an ideal effect for any DJ, entertainer or club who wants to blast out a frenzied light show over a large area. Great for projecting on walls and ceilings too, the Hyper Gem LED includes a multi-color Strobe Effect that adds to its eye-popping flash.
“Because it has four different-angled lenses, the Hyper Gem LED actually looks like four moonflower effects in one. So it creates an amazing amount of visual movement and excitement,” said Scott Davies, General Manager of the American DJ Group of Companies. “Many people remember the original ‘Gem’ as being one of American DJ’s classic moonflower effects. Well — as its name suggests — the Hyper Gem LED is a ‘hyper,’ wired version of this best-selling standard.”
The other part of its name, “LED,” attests to the fixture’s durability and ease of use – another evolution from its original namesake. Using long-life 100,000-hour-rated LEDs as its light source and having no moving parts, the Hyper Gem LED is built to last and virtually maintenance-free. Plus, since LEDs run at a much cooler temperature than conventional lamps, the unit can stay on all night without shutting down for duty cycles, and there’s no waiting for it to cool down at the end of a gig – entertainers can just pack it up and go!
The Hyper Gem LED is also easy to operate, even for users with very little lighting experience. You can just plug it in and turn it on, and it will run as a sound-activated effect to its own exciting built-in programs. What’s more, up to 16 Hyper Gem LED units can be linked together Master-Slave via 3-pin XLR cable, for a multi-fixture sound-active synchronized light show. Another easy control option is to use American DJ’s compatible UC3 remote controller (sold separately), which provides fingertip command over basic functions like Blackout, Strobe and Program Selection. More experienced operators who wish to create their own custom light show can program the Hyper Gem LED with any standard DMX-512 controller, such as American DJ’s DMX Operator. The unit can be operated in 2 DMX modes – 4-channel or 256-channel – and it features a convenient 4-buttom LED display on the rear panel for easy scrolling through DMX settings.
A perfect effect for mobile use, the Hyper Gem LED, is easily transportable, especially for a fixture that puts on such a large light show. It weighs just 11 lbs./5 kg., and measures 20.75”L x 12.5”W x 9.5”H/ 526 x 319 x 243mm. A convenient hanging bracket and multi-voltage operation(100-240V, 50/60Hz, IEC plug) make it ready to do duty anywhere.
Although it’ll step up the excitement wherever it goes, one thing the Hyper Gem LED won’t hype up are electricity bills. Thanks to the efficiency of its LEDs, the unit draws a mere 32W of power at maximum use, saving energy and money and allowing more units to be hooked up on a single circuit.
The MSRP of the Hyper Gem LED is $319.95.

Slimpar 38 and 64 Released By Chauvet
August 26, 2010
SLIMPAR™ 38 AND SLIMPAR™ 64 RELEASED
SUNRISE, Fla. – CHAUVET®, a leading manufacturer of LED lighting, announces the arrival of two new fixtures to the SlimPAR™ family: SlimPAR™ 38 http://www.chauvetlighting.com/slimpar-38.htmland SlimPAR™ 64 http://www.chauvetlighting.com/slimpar-64.html. The fixtures are launched in response to the successful SlimPAR™ 56http://www.chauvetlighting.com/slim-par-56.html.
Every member of the SlimPAR™ family are LED PAR fixtures with very slim casings—only 2.5 inches thick—that make them easy to transport. This compact unit can fit almost anywhere in your rig. The fixtures offer 3- or 7-channels of DMX control, or you can use the built-in automated and sound-activated programs or pulse effect with adjustable speed. They also offer static colors and RGB color mixing with or without DMX and built-in power linking for quick set up and break down.
The fixtures are differentiated chiefly by the number of LED lenses in each light and the number of units that can be power-linked together per circuit. SlimPAR™ 38 features 75 red, green and blue LEDs and up to 43 units can be connected, while SlimPAR™ 64 features 180 red, green and blue LEDs and up to 22 units can be connected.
Each PAR is so compact, five of them take the same space of one traditional PAR can. They all weigh less than three pounds (1.3 kg) and, when placed on their unfolded mounting brackets, stand only seven inches high. Plus, all three draw less than or equal to a quarter of an ampere. This means 80 units can fit on the same circuit.
These low-profile fixtures can easily be packed inside road cases and are perfect for the mobile DJ, band on-the-go or stage performer. They can be used as uplighting, area washes or truss warmers and they remember the last setting applied so you can just plug it in at the gig, maximizing your set-up time. They also work with Obey™ 3

No one cares about your sound system
August 25, 2010
The DJ may have just purchased the hottest sound system, have put together the coolest light show, have 10 million of the hottest new song titles and is ready for back to school, but it doesn’t matter. The only question on the principal’s mind is; how are you going to stop the little monsters from “Freak” dancing? Trust me, the biggest minds in secondary school education from sea to shining sea, have huddled for the past 2 months, scratching their heads to figure out how to get student cooperation in stopping the grind! I scan the internet daily to find information about school dance issues, and I am never disappointed. Somewhere in the country there is a meeting going on right now to brainstorm with faculty, administrators, parents and students about this year’s dance program.
The topic is always the same: nasty dancing in the school gym.
These meetings always get down to establishing the school standard, and figuring out how to enforce it. Dance contracts (getting student to agree to behave in advance), establishing enforcement (what happens if they misbehave), and finding a DJ who is sympathetic to their plight, and willing to cooperate with them in their efforts, is the hopeful outcome of these gathering.
No one has ever asked how they can get better sound in the building, or has anyone seen a great light show lately. It’s never happened. But the DJ’s flyer screams “big amp”, ” multi effect intelligent lighting”, and “state of the art DJ Laptop with Virtual DJ software”. No one cares. Scream what they want to hear, and they will listen.
